Those UAV's are almost impossible to see. I think every aviator who has flown in theater, myself included, has had some sort of incounter with them.

UAV's aren't running into each other, are they?

From the article:

“Due to the failure of the air traffic control tower to follow standard procedures, the two aircraft nearly occupied the same airspace at the same time. With a bit of luck the pilot avoided the crash,” says Baldazzi, who reveals that the aircraft missed each other by less than 50m (164ft). The airliner’s wake turbulence caused the UAV to crash.

See and avoid...only one party can comply with that. UAV's should not be occupying the same airspace as other aircraft until they have a reliable way to avoid a collision...maybe a TCAS II type unit that automatically flies the RA when one is issued.

Funny you should mention that. I was recently in the BK at Nellis and saw a 20 year old female airman (non-pilot, clearly) with a "Predator 1000 Hours" patch on her flight suit. I almost spit diet coke out of my nose. Pretty funny patch, I thought, until I remembered the Air Farce doesn't usually put smart ass stuff on their flight suits, etc (unlike us squids). It was meant to be serious. God save us all...

I doubt they will install Tcas since that would make the aircraft visiable to everyone...including the enemy. If you have a transponder code you can go on the internet and see any flights position thats under radar coverage.

I do think this problem will get worse At least currently we have pilots flying the UAV's...I think. But I suspect it won't be long until we have non-pilots flying them.

The next generation of UAVs will have traffic avoidance capability built in and it will be better than anything any of us could do with our eyeballs. The next gen stuff is pretty amazing and is definitely the future of military aviation. We'll never be replaced completely, but the writing is already on the wall in theater. UAV deconfliction is high priority stuff and I never could figure out why some idiot would make my fly around these things until I realized that the commanders over there would rather have a predator feed than whatever I happened to be hauling in my MC-130.

Note: Not trying to start an unmanned vs manned battle! I'm just saying that the next gen stuff is pretty eye-watering.

I realize that, which is why I said a TCAS II type unit.

Who is this "enemy"? And why do they have internet? And what if the enemy had UAV's and they agreed to be part of the ATC system and use Mode C on a friendly basis after signing a treaty. And wouldn't it be better if the enemy knew we watching them with UAV's so they would be nice and stop being the enemy?
