Given the volume of traffic and the number of intersecting runways, that figure of 5 runway incursions this year doesn't suprise me (not that its excusable, just not surprising).
I'm glad to see that ATC took the heat for this one, not the pilots.

That NEVER would have happened if I were the PIC of the Atlas 747 cause I would have noticed right away ATC made a mistake by clearing me to cross the active with another plane taking off!

Just kidding. Seriously, though, we all need to take a "trust but verify" attitude with ATC, especially at ORD. What happened to Atlas and UAL can happen at any time to any pilot. Our last line of defense in these matters? Our own two eyes and good SA.

God,
I remember about three years ago when a controller gave a United flt. taxi instructions that did not make sense. The pilot questioned the route and the controller reread the same route again. When the pilot tried to let the controller know that two of the taxiways don't intersect, he snapped and denied that he even gave her that route. The Captain had to step in and tell the controller to Zip it.

My point is that the God like attitudes of some of the controllers are, in my opinion, the main cause of ALL of the incursions there.
Most of the pilots know not to stick it out or your gonna get it cut off even if your right. Don't get me wrong, it's not about who is right just that it needs to get done right.

That's all I got to say about that!!

Shouldn't this thread be titled 'near collision' not 'near miss'?

Thank you, George Carlin.:D

I've usually had pretty good luck with ORD ground (knock on wood). Usually if you miss a taxiway they will get you back on track with minimal fuss. They just don't have time to yell at a pilot for more than 5 seconds. It's the smaller airports that sometimes have a controller with a chip on their shoulder.
