I've got some questions about the Navy. Does the Navy guarantee you a slot in pilot training when accepted for OCS or do you have to compete for a slot? What kind of say do you have over what track you go to after primary (strike, helos, etc.)?
The Marines have a program for guys off the street to become officers and pilots. You have to qualify and compete for it, but it guarantees that if you survive OCS and TBS you will go to flight school. About 1/3 of the pilots came into the Corps this way. If you don't mind being a Marine first and pilot second it is something to look into. It is definitely not for the weak or someone looking for an easy route to the airlines. Your local Marine Officer Selection Officer can tell you about it. He is not an enlisted recruiter, so don't be confused between the two. You will still have to compete for what platform you get based upon the needs of the service, availibility, and your desires. The top guy gets what he wants, everyone else gets leftovers. Keep in mind about 60% of our aircraft are helos. Two pilot ones at that.
