What do you want to do?

Full-time, part-time. Single pilot...

NASCAR teams fly everything from Barons to 737's; and just about everything in between.

Regardless, you better live within 75 miles of JQF. Thats where a large majority of teams fly out of. I flew a C-441 (Conquest II) and Citation Ultra for Amick Motorsports. Enjoyed it.

I fly part time (side work, paid per day) for a NASCAR team out of JQF in a PA-31. I have been doing it for a few months, good part time money. I have a bunch of buddies that fly full time for different race teams. It has taken me about 3 years to get into 'the loop'. You have to meet some of these pilots and get to know them (I just so happened to fly with some of them over the years as freight dogs out of JQF and BUY). That was my in. Like most corporate flying it is really about networking and who you know. The full time schedule can be pretty tough as they leave quite often on a Thursday (for example) and get back somtime on a Monday all during race season (of course, it varies). Race season is from Feb-Nov.

I was out at JQF yesterday and saw a NW Airlink CRJ on the ramp. I was told by a buddy of mine that it was there to do a demo for Ginassi(sp?)

One thing to know is most teams fly turbo props and fly the pit crews. Some of the teams for the most part use part time, not all. The drivers fly anything from light twins up to LR60s and they fly alot, not just to races. The drivers also do testing and sponsor duties, seems the pilots are always on the road.

Unless you are also used as a spotter you will never go to a race, if your driver happens to crash on the first lap he will be out of there and you better have the plane ready to go and he may not be in a good mood.

Drivers tend to pay OK teams a little low on day rate. Seems as if some pilots stay for years with a top driver, but most leave after one year.

I have heard that some race teams will make the flight crews bunk together in the same hotel room to save money.

Does that sound like fun when most race teams do the Wednesday to Sunday race schedule?

Ack!!

That's not the raceteam, that's some awe-struck loser CP thinking he is doing his favorite driver a favor by saving him a few dollars on hotel rooms when the sponsers send enough cash to pick up those expanses. I bet they don't pull that kind of junk over at Hendrick Motor Sport's flight department. Unfortunately, they learned in the worst way possible the value of a trained, well rested, professional crew.

In Pro Pilot a couple of months back they did a good story on these race teams and their flight departments. I have never seen a bigger group of redneck hick cowboy pilots than the ones flying KAs for Richard Childress racing (I think that is the one). The picture of the flight department pilots would scare you; bolo ties, 10 gallon hats, HUGE belt buckles, and some of the dumbest looks on their faces. I wish I had a link to it. It's the kind of place that you just know if you landed at the same airport they did and you did something they didn't like, the pilot would come track you down and tell you he is going to "kick you a$$", you MF!!!

If you think that issue is funny check out the latest cover at www.propilotmag.com and check out the sniper dude next to the chopper. I havn't seen a sniper dressed up in that "sneaking outfit" while flying in a chopper...ever!

What sniper, I can't see a sniper anywhere??? :D

Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports both operate Saab 2000s (not the slower 340 version - these are the fast, 50 seaters primarily found in Europe) out of JQF. I know a 328TP also operates for a Nascar team out of there and a few Brasilias take part.

I think I saw a recent ProPilot article about race-team flying - maybe 3-4 issues back. Check it out!

Another cop that's a SEAL/SF/Recon wannabe... Call in the SWAT Team so they can surround the place until the dude inside kills himself. TC

Dont get me started... I know that guy, and he pencil whipped his entire log book from 250-2500 hours!

Oh yeah babe!:angryfire

I wish they would quite profiling these law enforcement aviation departments, they are not really pilots (in the sense that 95% of the readers are) but are cops that happen to fly. The average pilot out ther is not going to become a cop to fly.

I was in Statesville, NC a couple of weeks ago. I know Michael Waltrip has a king air and a Emb 120 there. Matt Kenseth has a Falcon 10 and so does Greg Biffle. Evernham motorsports has a 120 there also. Joe Nemecheck has a Citation. DEI is on the South side of the field and Lowe's corporate flight dept. is based there. I am not too familiar with the area. it was my first time there.
