Can someone possibly porvide any info on the DC8 operation? How many, series. Pay for Capt, schedules bennies etc... Says theye are looking for DC8 Captains. Thanks.
wow, sorry. the cut n paste was only marginally successful!
I think the 8 is on something like an hour call out. Fairly short launch. Everyone is local or has a crash pad. They have that longevity bonus, that increases every year.
I talked to them about the t-props a couple of years ago. They seemed straight forward. A small operation that had done quite a bit in the past years to improve life there. They had a trip rig of sorts. The t-prop f/o base was 30k cpt 40k, they had a domestic and international per diem, and I think some sort of override for international. Not sure what if the base is on the 8. If I am wrong someone correct me.
Unfortunately, Murray Air is not even close to what it used to be. After they were purchased by National Air Cargo there was a marked change in managements attitude towards employees. People have been leaving like rats off of a sinking ship. Attrition on the 135 side was 50% in the last 6 months. Attrition is slightly less on the 121 side but is still a significant factor. The pay and schedules suck. 121 pilots get one day in six off call. Whenever management talked about contracts overseas, they said there would be 30 day rotations followed by, at most, 1 week off. 135 pilots get about 6 days off call a month. Longevity pay? you get a $520 raise a year, that's $10 a week. Murray Air depends on its contracts with Chrysler in order to survive. Chrysler owns two of the three DC-8s and all of the turbo props are on a corporate shuttle contract for them. With the recent change in ownership at Chrysler I'd say Murray is on very shaky ground. Run, do not walk, away from Murray Air.
On the other hand, if you live in the Detroit metro area and don't want to work a lot, it's not a bad place to be. Sometimes you only fly once a month. It is very hard to commute since you only get about 6-10 days off, and not normally in a block. I estimate the DC-8 pilots fly about 300-400 hours a year, and the shuttle guys probably less. The 135 shuttle is mainly scheduled with a very few pop up trips. The 121 is all unscheduled charter flights with one hour call out. Expect to expend time on the road with little or no notice, sometimes for as long as a month.
The first year pay is competitive in the both the 135 and 121 side, but there is a lack of pay raises in the years after that. For the 121 there is a $10 a week raise per year. So if first year FO pay is 37,440$, the second year is 37,960 and third year 38,480, and so on. First year 121 captain is 57,590. For the 135, there is no pay raise period. 30,000 for FO and 40,000 for captain.
They are looking for DC-8 captains because most of the FO's are low time.
I believe the per-diem is 1.25 domestic and 2.50 international. They have duty rig of 2 hours a day when on the road.
There is jumpseat agreement with NWA and are working to get on the CASS system.
They have 2 JS31/32, a SAAB 340, 2 DC8-63 and a DC8-71.
I hope this helps and correct me if I'm wrong.
I have to agree with the previous post. I spent two good years at Murray Air and had a great time when I worked. Treated well and felt like I was working for a family rather than a company. I felt the QOL was fairly decent since I got to spend a lot of time at home. Take it for what it's worth... a YIP based on demand cargo airline, and you won't be disappointed.
