I've got to buy some multi time soon. As we all know, most of the block time programs out there predicate their $80 or $100 an hour on having two pilots split the time: one logs PIC as sole manip while the other logs it as acting PIC while safety pilot.

I already know there are problems with this, namely that some flight departments from corporate/fractional to airline won't even consider the safety pilot time towards multi PIC.

My question is this: What about that first job or two? Will anyone hiring me with 50 multi care that half is semi-authentic safety pilot PIC? Should I just suck it up now and pay the full $160 to $200 an hour and get genuine PIC time?

Better yet, point me towards someone who'll hire me with 15 multi so I don't have to buy any of it. :)

flight express or ram air. you don't even need your multi rating to get hired.

Correct but you do need the 135 mins from what I've been told. Those two companies will expect you to fly single engine for at least 6 months until you upgrade to a multi. This is hear say but the mins are posted on their websites:

Pilots are required to have the Part 135 IFR PIC minimums per 135.243(c):
  • Commercial Single-Engine certificate with an instrument rating
  • 1200 Hours Total
  • 500 Hours Cross Country - point to point
  • 100 Hours Night
  • 75 Hours Instrument total - up to 25 in a simulator allowed
  • 50 Hours Instrument in FLIGHT - simulated (hood) or actual

Buy the cheapest piece of crap twin you can find (with some time left on the engines) and fly the hell out of it. If you go in with a buddy you can split the costs. When you succesfully find a job building multi-time, sell it for what you paid for it and you are a happy camper. :)

just go get the multi time asap. there is no column in your logbook that says "safety pilot" time. if you're the PIC and the other person is under the hood, you both can log it as PIC (as long as you meet certain requirements), but in the remarks column, you just have to put in the name of the safety pilot. Just keep it legal and safe and you won't get questioned about it. There are plenty of people I know who've split multi time and are now flying for a regional airline.

100 hours multi PIC = $8000 = regional SIC for years.
0 - 10 hours multi PIC = $3000 (includes cost of rating) = PIC of single pilot cargo op. then multi PIC for years.

So essentially, 3 years after getting either that cargo or regional job, the regional guy has 2000 SIC tubine and the cargo guy has 2000 PIC piston and $5000 extra dollars in his pocket.

Also before you can do the single pilot cargo operation you'd be required to have the 135 mins which is higher than some regional's mins.

Go figure.

Reeaaalllllyyyy? Been there, got bent over that table, got the t-shirt. It works, but you really got to have your eyes wide open when you originate one of these deals. Also, don't partnership with anyone that you don't care if you ever talk to them again after the partnership is over.

 :(

So what happened?? I've been considering a partnership myself.

Search it. FN got bent big time on a Cessna partnership with two buddies. Ugly ass scenario. Hi screenname wasn't FN at that point though, you'll recognize the posts when you find them.
