Mouthwash Risk???

I have this paradontal (paradental) (spelling anyone) pocket between two of my teeth.

(apparently the dentist says it comes from grinding my teeth which comes from STRESS which he says mostly comes from the persons job. Gee I wonder how that could be? Thanks Airways!!! Like its not enough you kicked me out of the left seat, took 27,000/year from me, keep pushing me backwards, now your making small holes between my teeth which makes me wakeup in the middle of the night in pain like somebody is shoving needles in the nerves around my teeth.)

Anyway the dentist recommends that I use mouth wash after every meal. I have been doing this while at home (while not at work) and it keeps the pain away, but now I need to take it on the road with me because the problem has become more frequent. The dentist says the better I keep it clean the faster the gum will heal and thus the problem. One the road I was using BioTene a mouthwash that he recommended that has no alcahol. At home I use Listerine which does.

Basically BioTene sux donkey balls. It tastes like watered down milk with alittle mint added. The Listerne is stronger and does a better job of cleaning anything that gets into the pocket. The dentist even backed this up.

So my question - will the alcahol in the Listerine show up if I get tested one the job after I use it? My dentist seems to think it won't even register. In the past 4 years I've been selected for ramdom testing 3 times. Once in ABE for a pee test and twice in SYR, both were breath test which obviously blew 0 both times or I wouldn't be here. What do you guyts think? Is the listeine Safe? Or should I suck it up and stick with the BioTene which sux?

I would think not. There is quite a bit of alcohol in mouthwash, but how much is absorbed through your skin while swishing is minimal. Next, think about time from swish to the actual breath test. Yeah...you're okay.

A breathalyzer test relatively soon after the use of an alcohol based mouthwash will show up as a small percentage of alcohol in your system. The mucus membranes in your mouth, tongue, etc., can absorb the alcohol in the mouthwash and subsequently give an erroneous reading. (Hence the .04% allowable tolerance stipulated in §91.17). Obviously, a blood or a urine sample would negate the breathalyzer.

I worked as a police officer for a number of years and have done my fair share of DWI arrests. If it was possible to get a high Blood Alcohol from mouthwash I would have heard it as a defense. And I have been involved in probably 300 or so. Before a breathalizer is administered we were required to monitor the subject for 15 minutes prior to having them blow to get out what is called mouth alcohol. This is residual alcohol left in the mouth after a drink of alcohol or using mouthwash with alcohol in it. The difference is significant if you get a breathalizer just after drinking or using mouthwash. If someone asks you to give a breathalizer just after you use mouthwash the 15 minute rule should work fine. Just wash your mouth with water. And after you use it, DON'T SWOLLOW!

My dentist said the same thing only he recomended that I use a mouth guard when I sleep. Similar to a football mouth piece. Uncomfortable but probably works a bit quicker than mouthwash.

Mouthguard

Use the mouthguard! If it is uncomfortable, get a different one; my wife has had that problem for years and goes through about one per year. She uses one produced by the dentist for her teeth; our dentist let us keep the impression used for production and they are about $35 each instead of about $100. Look out though; she had one dental "specialist" a couple years ago charge $300 for one that was IDENTICAL.

Sensitive tooth toothpaste helps as well with desensitizing her gums. Never heard the mouthwash thing before.

If you don't use the mouthguard, get ready for crowns and other fun, expensive dental procedures!

Policy when I was an officer in CA was to wait 20 minutes after the consumption or use of any alochol (including mouthwash) before administering a breathalyzer test. In addition, the suspect had the right to refuse specific types of tests but was assumed (by statute) to be under the influence if he/she refused ALL types of test (breath, blood, etc). If you use the blood test the mouthwash wouldn't be a factor. I have seen errors with the breathalyzer and mouthwash. Well below the .08 needed to drive but close enough to .04 to make me nervous.

Just A thought I was parnaoid about the alcohol thing to.
Check out the Label especiially the mini LIRSTERMINT that you get in some of the hotels, most of them that I've seen say "alcohol free ", I would assume that you can get a large size somewhere in some store.

This mouthwash is labeled as (LISTERMINT) not listerine
