Phoenix, Tucson, then east to El Paso and then you are through the mountains. I did it last year from KADS to northern California and never had to go above 8000. I think it is the lowest altitude route through.
If you've never flown in mountainous terrain and are not going to get some instruction from an experienced mountain pilot, I strongly suggest buying the book "Mountain Flying Bible" by Sparky Imeson. It contains useful information and is written to be easy to understand.
never expect that you will be able to fly your plan perfectly... weather, density altitude, winds... have a plan B for every segment of your route... don't make promises to anyone about your time frame, you'll need the flexibility to get there safely, especially if you're new at it...
