I will be starting class soon on the XL

A few questions that I thought of -

After Type at Flight Safety how long before OE begins ?

How long after initial type before differences class on the XLS ?

The reserve schedule what does a typical line look like days on/off ?

The 4 days that you can specify is their a good way to use them to maximise days off ?

Does the XL/XLS ever go outside the US ?

Thanks for the info

I'm not on the XL but I'll try to answer some of these.

Varies by equipment, I suspect the XL is backed up like the Ultra so it could be a month or two.

No idea, but I know lots of current XL pilots have not done XLS training yet so it could be quite some time.

Again, this varies but in my case I've been getting 7 day long tours with 4 to 6 days off afterwards.

Yes, I just starting bidding that way and it works pretty well. For March I have a carryover trip ending on the 4th so I bid 10-11 and 24-25th for "H" days. I'm off 5-11 and 19-25 so basically I have a 7 on 7 off schedule while on reserve. Remember you need 4 days off after a 7 day trip so bid "H" days a few days after that. They almost never send you out for anything less than 4 to 5 days.

Does the XL/XLS ever go outside the US ?

Canada, Mexico, Bahamas and other Islands in the Carribean. Possibly more, I'm not certain.

Thanks for the info

I'm on the XL/XLS for last 3.5 years.

Figure 5 weeks for Indoc and Sim. Then 2 more weeks for flight training portion with the company. Usually followed by 2 weeks off while they get you on the schedule, then out to IOE you go.

It may be a bit longer if they are backed up, but the XL/XLS fleet is growing so fast that they aren't having a lot of availability problems with aircraft.

My understanding is that they are doing XLS qualification in initial training and/or IOE. Not much difference other than avionics, though the XLS is a real stud in climb. 17 min from SL to 410 at gross on std day the other day... and she overspeeded in the level off. 8^)

Can't help you on the Reserve schedule. Was on 17 day until summer of last year but it isn't the same. Maybe some other Reserve guys could give him a hand here?

You'll do 99% domestic. Canada, the islands. Never been to Bermuda though we can.

Typical day is 4-5 legs, 13 hours if your flying and about 10 if you're airlining or sitting standby. About 11 hours rest per day. Average leg length is about 1.7 hours or so. I've flown about 500 hours a year in this jet for NJ.

I would guess Captain upgrade to be 3+ years minimum. We're hiring a lot right now and doing a lot of upgrades, but that may be a surge to account for the lack of it before the contract. Averaged numbers by late fall will give you a better idea of what to expect.

BTW, be sure to pay attention during the union briefing at indoc and get registered on the NJ board. Lots of good information there.
