Hey, all! Sorry about adding to the fairly lengthy list of FedEx questions, but i've got a couple of my own. Here goes.

1.) I have heard that in the past Fedex allowed you to interview with them for a flight officer position if you work for them for at least 2 consecutive years, provided you meet the mins. Currently I am employed with a recent Fedex division by the name of Fedex Freight(formerly American Freightways). My one year anniversary is rapidly approaching. My question is do you have to be employed by Fedex EXPRESS in order to be eligible for the interview rights, or will being employed by any Fedex division as long as it's under the Fedex name(such as my employer) count as an eligibility standard?

2.) My last question is more or less about a rumor that I heard. About 3 to 4 years ago a Fedex 727 captain told me that in the years to come, the 727s will be phased out and replaced by 737-800s. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this rumor?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about #1, but i believe there was a earlier thred on this board about that, and I do not think it is the case any more. My guess is that it would add a little weight to a resume though.

As to #2, many rumors abound about the Boeing's replacement. I have heard newer 737's and also Airbus 319/320. We do have alot of Airbus product already, so who knows what deal Fred might try to cut (launch customer in the US for the 380). Aslo rumor has it that the earlier 737 was not attractive due to lower cruise mach.

Good question

Schmooze,

I have no idea about your first question. I have met quite a few guys who were professional instructors with Fed Ex and subsequently received an interview. I believe there was the 2 year wait for them, not sure about the many other divisions within the company.

As for your second question... I have heard many, many rumors on the replacement of the 727. None of which have mentioned the 737-800. I have heard of 737-300s, 737-400s, airbuses, 757, and more. The fact is the 727 (-200) will be around for a while longer and although Fed Ex has thought of replacements, they aren't feeling the pressure yet. As the -100s come due for expensive checks, I was told that we are parking them. The aircraft industry is obviosly in a slight state of turmoil which has potentially changed Fed Ex's view on which aircraft to buy and when. If the price was right, you'd see some low-earth orbit/reusable space vehicle types with a purple tail.

I'm sure that clears it up. ; )

schmooze,

The best thing to do in reguards to your first question is talk to your manager at Freight. I have some first hand knowledge of this and I am afraid that working at FedEx Freight will not help you much in getting an interview with Express.....Sorry.

Soooo!...question?....if someone works for FedEx, he/she will have a guaranteed interview after a period of time?....and what time that might be?
Thank you

only what I have heard

I really don't know the facts for sure, but I have only heard of professional flight instructors getting this deal. I also understand that it is a 2 year deal and you get an interview. I know one instructor type that did that and is now on the line. Hopefully someone else knows the details.

Schmooze...

FedEx Corporation has a policy of hiring from within, that is, they'll fill an open position through INTERNAL hiring before they'll resort to EXTERNAL hiring. Once a job opening has been posted, INTERNAL applicants get preference.

Job openings for FedEx Express are posted on the TAO (Corporate E-mail system) Bulletin Board CAREER-OPS each week. If a FedEx employee meets the requirements posted for ANY job posted, and they have fulfilled the obligation incurred by accepting their PRESENT job, they may apply for the opening. CREW MEMBER jobs are treated the same way.

The MINIMUM commitment for ANY job is 1 year, per corporate policy. SOME jobs require longer commitments. Handlers generally require 1 year, couriers require 1 year, etc., etc. "Professional Flight Instructor" posistions in the Flight Training department have required 3 years. ONE good deal, though, that PRO Instructors have been getting is the opportunity to interview for the Crewmember position when they're hired as Pro Instructors, thus removing the uncertainty of the outcome of an interview AFTER waiting 3 years. All OTHER internal applicants, so far as I know, must complete their commitment (1 yr, 18 mos., whatever) before they can even APPLY to be interviewed. At THAT point, they are guaranteed an interview, but the outcome of that interview is NOT guaranteed. :( That being said, I know pilots that did the handler stint, I know pilots that went the Instructor route, and I know pilots that were couriers (in fact, I was one).

I don't know about FedEx Freight employees - - if they can apply for jobs through JCATS, they're in.

GOOD LUCK ! :)
