Hey-

I read in the paper a couple of weeks ago about a new airline possibly starting up in Minnesota because of a potential strike by the only carriers that go there (Mesaba/Pinnacle/can't remember now). Supposedly it had funding from the governmental bodies in the various areas and appeared to be more than a pipe dream (yeah, right). Anyone heard anything about this?

Local politicians who know nothing about aviation.

I know one of the guys trying to put the deal together. Right now, a manned Mars shot looks like a better deal. They supposedly have investors, but lots of in-fighting, too many chiefs who want to run the show, and want to compete against Mesaba routes with no code-share. Govt money? No. They've applied for a DOT Air-21 grant, which has not been approved yet. Lotsa luck.

Yeah, I think I read something about this in the Minneapolis Star Tribune last week. Isn't it a couple of guys up in the Iron Range. Hibbing, maybe?

Only problem is that when ATC assigns you a clearance, you have to reply:

Ya, shure, you betcha!

Before the flames come pouring in, I live there.

Thank you for the information. Do you have a name of the people/outfit trying to do this? It's gutsy, ya gotta admit that (and perhaps other things too, but I digress). What's all the in-flighting about anyway? SHeesh.

Thanks again!

!!

The guy heading up the effort is Dave Danielson, airport manager in Hibbing (HIB). Let me know if you find out anything!

Supposedly, investors have been lined up, and they want to start service with some Dash-8s. But they still don't have an operating certificate, so who knows how close they are.

Also, now that Mesaba is pulling out of Grand Rapids (MN), it'll be interesting to see if someone steps forward to try and provide service. Hey, after all, that's where Gordy Newstrom started Mesaba back in 1944!

Correction... NW is pulling their service to GPZ... it just happens to be operated by Mesaba Airlines. NW controls every aspect of our schedules and fleet, no matter how awful the affects are.

So there will still be service to GRR?

GRR is Grand Rapids, MI, this discussion is about Grand Rapids, MN. Clear?

I have some pretty good connections to this, I know some people closely involved to this. It seems like it maybe a reality, it doesn't seem as negative from what I have heard. I've heard they are getting close to it becoming a reality and that NWA would like to dump all of the Northern MN routes. So there would be a route structure for them. Other than that all I can say is the investors are Very Knowlegable in this kind of undertaking.

Looks like some group is trying to make a million dollars in an aviation venture.

If it does happen, I can't wait to see their reaction if and when the pilot group wants to organize.
