I'm currently at the end of my second fighter tour with about 1500 PIC fighter, 2800 total with civilian flying, and ATP. I'm looking at one year out of the cockpit in a foreign coutry and potentially pressing to the airline world after that. I'm working guard part time jobs for the flip, but I would like any thoughts on how long and if I really have a competitve chance to get hired with in a year of getting out.

Thanks

In today's climate, that's hard to answer. Not too many places hiring right now and for the future. SW and JB like mil pilots. I'd say your time is ok, but certainly nothing special. For SW you'll have to go get a 737 type. Don't know what FEDEX will be doing, but they're a possibility. Keep in mind, though, there's thousands of airline pilots out of work right now with a lot higher times and experience than you. Good luck, though. Start contacting your buddies at the airlines that are hiring for LORs etc. Don't put anything off. You want you apps out before you leave service.

JetBlue & SouthWest both inquire as to your flight time over the past 2-3 years. If you do that non-flying tour it could really hurt your numbers.

These days, every former military/aspiring airline pilot has GOT to have a Reserve/Guard job on the side to fall back on. It'll keep you proficient and current while waiting for the call and put a little money in your pocket. It's also a great place to network. Get the Reserve/Guard thing lined up BEFORE you go overseas if possible.

At JetBlue your flight time will be compared against other Military pilots prior to getting an interview.-Our hiring guys compare corporate/corporate, mil/mil, regional/regional, cargo/cargo, etc. W/that in mind, you should be able to figure out how you stack up to other fighter guys in your situation. If you're on the low side when doing that comparison, it would be something to think about...

Good luck!

Will that one year remote allow for flying with the aero club, assuming there is one? If so, don't dilly dally, sign up. Keep flying when you can. Going home on mid tour. Get checked out and rent a plane around home. Keeps your head in the flying game, maintains proficiency a little, and show you love to fly and are serious about wanting that airline job. Of course, get the 737type if SWA is a possibility. Getting it while proficient in flying would mean doing it before going overseas. Get the ATP along with it. Won't cost anymore. Good luck.

Don't know if you're interested, but regionals are hiring. Maybe a foot in the door.

Good Luck

thanks for the info

Thanks for all the info. I'm working the guard job and provided I get that job will be the only way I'll get out. The thing that worries me is the non flying for a year, the last 7 months of which I'll be unable to rent anything. Any ideas on how much this will hurt my chances?

Thanks
