Got an e-mail from a perspective student. He is a military helicopter pilot and has civilian Commercial certificate w/rotorcraft-helicopter and instrument rating. He wants to get private pilot ASEL certificate and wants to know what will be required as far as knowledge test, aeronautical experience, training requirements, etc.

I've been digging through the part 61/141 FAQs and the regs and haven't come up with a complete answer yet. Anyone here ever have a similar situation and can offer some advice?

Probalby have to do the whole thing?

I did some conversions for USAF guys who did not have their Private ASEL, but had gotten a Comm AMEL through mil comp. All they had to do was demo landings, and a forced landing. For the things like stalls, X-country, etc. they got credit from their Comm AMEL certificate. You might be able to wavier the X-country, and Inst flight, but I am going to say all of the airplane manuvers, stalls, landings, steep turns etc. Talk to a designated examiner and he will tell you what you need.

Airplane ratings for helo pilots

Your prospect would have to fulfill all the requirements that pertain to airplane pilots as set forth in 14 CFR 61.87, 14 CFR 61.93 and 14 CFR 61.109 , along with the same Class B and other endorsements you would give to any other student. Your prospect would have to take the written. You would have to give him all the 14 CFR 61.87 presolo training and you would have to solo him out. That would mean that if he already has a medical he would have to go to FSDO and have a student pilot certificate issued. If he does not have an FAA medical, he can see an AME and have the usual combination medical-student pilot certificate issued.

I am not 100% sure on cross-countries, but I suspect he still has to fulfill the Private requirements because his Commercial is for rotor only.

Looking ahead to his airplane instrument rating, he will just have to demonstrate a couple of approaches and maybe holding. He might have to plan a cross-country for the oral. My second signoff was an old Army helo pilot with a Private Airplane who wanted to add instrument privileges to his airplane rating.

Hope this helps. I've had three helo drivers as airplane students. You will find that they pick up airplane flying quickly and are great students.
