Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with my microsoft internet explorer? When I first try to type in a webpage it will take forever then a window will pop up saying that it was unable to open up the search page. Then the "this page cannot be displayed" page shows up everytime. The one with the picture of the paper and the "I". Its been like this for a few days and I cant seem to get it fixed. Right now I'm using netscape because it works, but I dont really like netscape and would like to go back to IE. Also tried installing IE again, but it said a newer version of IE was already on the CPU and I can't remove IE from the add/remove programs thing. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance...Great Cornholio

Sorry man, you're screwed.

This happened to me a couple of years back and I ended up having to send Bill Gates a check -- and it wasn't a small one.

Now I use a Mac with a Safari browser. No blue "crash" screen; no technical support people in India teaching me how to reinstall my system; no big
-brother watching me. Bliss, baby, bliss.

Sounds like you have a virus. Happened to me a few months ago. Get a virus scan, such as McAfee. Might cost you about 30/yr, but it is well worth it to avoid problems like these.

First you can try to delete your Temporary Internet Files. Depending on your settings for these, they can cause IE to not start propoerly thus giving you your errors. Go to Tools, internet options and delete the files. You can also delete the cookies if your desperate.

Run a virus scan on your puter. Make sure the definitions are updated. Then, download a ad-ware removal program and run that. These inmbed themselves deep inside your registry and cause all sort's of problems. You can download a few good one's off the internet. Do a search for them.

Another way to keep crap off your 'puter is to use a mailer called "Pegasus Mail" (www.pmail.com)

The sweetest thing about PMAIL is that it allows you to download the headers of email waiting on your POP server, then you select the ones you want, and download those, and delete the rest - one good way to keep crap (spam and viruses), off your computer.

Sure, you can do it in MSOutlook, with about 10 additional steps, in PMAIL, its quicker and smoother.

And the best part of PMAIL, its free (and thats a good word)!

I think if you try to uninstall IE it gives you an option of repairing IE. It will look for whatever is bad and either repair it or self download and install the good file.

Check Windows Update on top of your Start button to see if you're missing any security updates or if there's an updated IE.

I'm still using Windows 98SE so I could be off if you're more up to date.

Yep, gottafly is right.

Classic spyware problem. When the syware does not work, you get all sorts of garbage, unusual responses, pop-ups etc.

Ad-Aware works perfectly and I use it, but doesn't give you free blocking (you gotta pay for it)

Spybot gives your scanning, removal and blocking all for free if you are an individual (not a business).

After downloading and installing, do the update to get latest definitions, then do a scan to detect spyware, then "fix" ie: remove stuff, then go to the immunize section and enable. This will block future attacks. You still need to get updates a couple times a month and run a scan a couple times a month.

Thanks guys...I've had adaware and cwshreader for a few months and have ran them both, but that hasent helped at all. Also have had Macafee for a while and ran a scan last night with an update and it found no viruses. IE still doesnt work but I'm gonna try to update adaware and cwshreader and hopefully it is just a spyware thing that I can get rid of. Anyways thanks for the help again.

Oh yeah I'm using XP. And I even tried to do that repair IE think on add/remove programs, but that didn't work either.

Well finally got it to work. Not sure what did it because I updated Adaware and found a bunch of spyware and updated CWShreader and ran both of them. Then finally messed around with the connection part of Tools>Internet Options and IE works so thanks for you help.

L4T, I'm with you. My XP machine is in the corner collecting dust ever since upgrading to the iMac w/ 10.3 Panther. Bliss baby, bliss is right! Cornholio, how's that water taste at waterski anyway? Do those pax over there ask you if you're old enough to fly that jet? :D

Boy, isn't that the truth. I've never been happier since switching to a "minority" computer. It does everything I want a computer to do, and none of the things (spyware, worms, pop-ups, etc.) that I don't.

Well worth the switch!

Amen Brother!

Made the switch 2.5 years ago, will never go back!

Get a Mac, run Safari! Google search built in, pop up/behinds all blocked, cache dumper built in, tabbed browsing.

I have got most of the crews in KMEM to switch to Macs, and they won't go back either!

Its good. Its even more fun when the F/A is older and tells the pax that I'm her son and I'm just along for the ride. Hows things at the old place? You got a class date yet?

Too much! No class date yet, somehow staring at my phone doesn't make it ring any quicker. There's a June class, so hopefully I'm senior enough in the pool to get into it.
