Pittsburgh weighed as hub for Mesa
Arizona-based regional line could reduce impact of US Airways' cutbacks
Tuesday, May 11, 2004

By Dan Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Even as US Airways plans to strip Pittsburgh of its "hub" status, commuter carrier Mesa Air is studying a move that could lessen the impact. The Phoenix-based airline said yesterday that it was looking at the possibility of operating its own hub from Pittsburgh International Airport.

"Pittsburgh is an opportunity we are taking a very close look at," said Jonathan Ornstein, Mesa's chief executive officer. "We believe Pittsburgh could operate profitably in a hub structure with the right cost model."

"With the right cost model." I wonder what that means? I gaurantee it's an employee based low cost.

Sounds like JO might be deep sixing 91. He's not going to accept the financial responsibility of UAIR's problems, or if he does it will not be on the terms that UAIR is looking for. JO will have a backdoor clause to pull the SJ's and flip them to his new IND carrier at the next S&P downgrade.

Just the beginning of the regionals dictating the future.:)

Good for Mesa. I wish them well! They have much more of a chance to go it alone than, say, Indy Air. What does "SJ" mean, lowecur?
