Are Mesa Pilots allowed to instruct as a second job on their days off? I have heard different answers. Since the wage is low I thought that might be a good option for an extra job. AOPA says that it's not considered commercial since you don't need a medical. Thanks in advance.

There are many opinions floating around about what constitutes "commercial" operations. AOPA is probably right but there is usually some Fed running around with other opinions. Here are the few I've heard. Part 91 is not commercial because it's not 135 or 121. flight instruction doesn't require a medical but airplane rental requires the 100 hr. inspection for instruction given since the rental is a "commercial" operation. flight instruction is commercial since you have to have a commercial certificate to go with your CFI certificate. More importantly, who the hell is MESA anyway to tell you what you can and can't do on your days off anyway?

I hear some Mesa pilot's moonlight as IRS agents, used car salesmen and meter maids. ;)

Sorry couldn't resist.

mesa

I want to know if it is illegal and if other pilots are doing it to survive the first year at a regional?

is it legal?

What I love about this profession is that rules are intentionally set up to protect operators and place all burden for compliance on pilots. 'Legal' is what FSDO says. There are 82 FSDOs and each has lots of inspectors. Each has an opinion, and that is what is 'legal'. My POI says flight instructing is NOT commercial flying. That doesn't mean yours' will. Call someone at your FSDO, give them a hypothetical situation, get their opinion and name and keep it with you. Good luck.

ps Also, check your contract and work rules, the answer might be found there.

"Call someone at your FSDO, give them a hypothetical situation, get their opinion and...."

Who's FSDO? Would you call you local FSDO, where you instruct or your airline's FSDO who oversees your airlines 121 ticket. In my case I live in Syracuse, NY so my local FSDO is Rochester or Albany but the airline I work for is headquartered in Middletown, PA and has Harrisburg as its FSDO. What if they have diff. opinions?

Or maybe get one of those temp. jobs in construction. Then you could make off with all the scrap 2x4s and eventually have enough to build yourself a small hut behind one of the rock piles in Arizona!!

Thats my plan if I get on there!! Hey, think about it, we could eventually have our own little pilot community in the deep desert. Build a water well, hunt lizards, grow some plants,............yeeeaaahhhhh.

Hangin tough in the Baron @2am,

Jeff
