I am taking my MEI ride ALLATPS in a couple of months and had a couple of questions I was hoping someone could answer.

1. Do you need to limit the rudder on the Semonile during the VMC Demo? According the V-speeds I have it looks like I will have to.

2. For the Drag Demo, does anybody have any of the power settings?
Blue Line in the clean config=?
Blue line with Gear down=? Flaps-25=?
Flaps-40?
3. In the ALLATPS study book they show stall recovery as
Power UP, Flaps UP(slowly), then Gear-Up.
I have always learned it as
Power-Up, Flaps-Approach, Positive Rate-Gear-UP, BlueLine-Flaps-Up.
If ALLATPS does Flaps-Up prior to VY isnt that contrary to what the PTS says reference final flap retraction prior to Vx/Vy?

Thank You for any insights!

Sorry I don't have any input, but let us know how it goes. I'm interested in getting my MEI there too.

Good luck

Basically, if you don't lose control during the demonstrations recovery you'll be just fine. AllATPs doesn't force their method of flying on you for the short (10 or less) courses. If you do their career program, then they'll get on your case.

BTW, the PTS and Designee Update specifically require full rudder deflection during the Vmc demonstration. Blocking the rudder is specifically prohibited by the applicant. With the Seminole, Vmc is below stall for most altitudes and most likely your training and checkride aircraft weights. You'll know if the DPE is blocking the rudder if the aircraft yaws first instead of stalling first in the Vmc demo.

Now if the examiner wants to live a long and happy life, they may take it upon themselves to block the rudder, but don't count on it.

Fly SAFE!

Hi,
I just completed my MEI at ATP. I did not limit the rudder during Vmc. I would announce "full rudder deflection" and recover at first sign of loss of directional control or the stall horn. During my checkride, however, the examiner asked me to limit the rudder.

Here are the steps I used for the drag demo:
1) Clearing turns
2) Power 15" MP
3) Gear Down, Before Landing Checklist (flaps 40)
4) Left throttle close, Right throttle full open
5) Pitch for 88, note the VSI
6) Flaps up
7) Pitch for 88, note the VSI
8) Gear up
9) Pitch for 88, note the VSI
10) Left engine, simulate feather
11) Pitch for 88, note the VSI
12) Pitch for 82, note the VSI
13) Pitch for 100, note the VSI

As far are stall recovery....We would go to full power, retract flaps slowly, positive rate-Gear up. Sorry, I can't answer your question regarding what the PTS says in reference to retracting flaps before blue line. I'll have to look that one up. Hope this helped.

It's been a while but I'll give it a shot...

1. The examiner may or may not block the rudder. In either case, recover at first indication of yaw or stall. You shouldn't be blocking the rudder unless he wants to fly it and let you play the MEI role.

2. Isn't the point of the drag demo to show what the plane will do at max continuous power with an engine failure in different configs? Power should be set at climb (25/25) on the good engine and zero thrust (depends on the year Seminole, check the POH) on the other until you want to demonstrate windmilling config.

3. I agree with you. Dumping all of your lift is the last thing you want to do in a stall. I doubt if ATP's teaches it that way and if they do, I'd be a little worried.

......stall recovery

I don't remember what the PA44 POH says about flap retraction, but I believe the idea is, that with the Piper manual flaps, you can easily control the retraction at a slower pace than most electric flaps.

same here...let me know how it goes

I will let you guys know how it goes.

I should have clarified the power settings I was looking for. In the ALLATPS study guide they have the following steps:

1. Clearing turns
2. Go to blue line- (whats the power setting for tweo engines that gives you blue line?)
3. Gear down, maintain blue line- (whats the power setting?)
4. Flaps 25, maintain blueline- (whats the power setting?)
5. Flaps 40, maintain blueline- Whats the power setting?)
Then you close the left throttle and just note vsi as you retract items.

Did you not read my reply above? I just completed my MEI at ATP. I listed the steps for the Drag Demo. We didnt do the demo based on what the supplement says. The only power setting during the maneuver is left throttle closed/right throttle open. Your instructor may have you do it differently. Bottom line is...it's a maneuver that can be learned and demonstrated on one or two attempts.

Ok, I did read it. I just missed the part that you did it at ALLATPS (sorry).

Basically, they arent going to go thru those first few step.

Thanks
