Sorry if this question has been asked previously and I missed it, but I have always been taught (probably like most people) that a first class medical is good for 6 calender months a second class for 12 calender months etc. Then I was told by an AME that you actually get an extra month because according to 61.23 (2) "A second-class medical certificate expires at the end of the last day of-the twelfth month after the month of the date of examination shown on the certificate..." It seems that this could be interpreted to mean you get an extra month because the end of the twelfth month after the date of exam would be the end of the next month the following year. Furthermore, if the FAA intend for us to go by the 6 calender months or 12 calender months why didn't they just write that? I know that this is an anal question and I am still going to go by the way I was taught previously to be on the safe side, but this topic is sparking a debate at my school with some pretty knowledgable people and I thought I would get some of your views as well. Thanks!

Maybe you're not anal enough. ;) Pull those fingers out and start counting.

Let's suppose you get your medical February 15th. What is the "month of the date of examination"? Can we agree that it's February?

Now, what's the first calendar month after February? I think it's March.

Now keep counting. What's the 12th calendar month after February?

1-March
2-April
3-May
4-June
5-July
6-August
7-September
8-October
9-November
10-December
11-January

=Drum roll=

12-???????

For extra credit:

And the last day of the 12th month is?

It is good for commercial privileges 12 calendar months. There =can= be an "extra" month, but that's based on good scheduling. Many people get there certification at the beginning of the next month. So in the February example, the medical "expires" February 28. If you get the new medical anytime in February, the new one "expires" the following February. But if you wait until March 1 to get the new medical, you gain the extra month since it's good for commercial ops until the following March 31.

Thanks
That is how I always thought that it was. However an AME came into one of my classes and told us that if you get a 2nd (or whatever) class medical it was good until the end of the following month no matter what part of the month you got it. I guess he was wrong, which is bad because he probably explains this to his patients the wrong way! Thanks for your help midlifeflyer.

medical

How about this question.

Part 91 jet operation.

SIC had a 1st class medical 13 months ago.

Is he or she legal to act as SIC?

You might be surprised at the answer from the FSDO.

being paid as a pilot?

is the Part 91 person being paid for flying?

The day I visited Sonoma airport and walked into a discussion among some CFIs who has been to as seminar where some idiot from a FSDO told them that if a CFI lets a student (with a PP certificate) log PIC during a dual then the CFI could not was the day I stopped being surprised by =anything= that comes from a FSDO.
