A friend of mine (really) just went to get their student pilot certificate and the doctor denied it to them because an anti-depressant was listed as medication. Where can I find a master list of medications you can and cannot take to obtain a medical? The only FARs I can find are in part 67 regarding medical requirements. Also, anyone have any suggestions who to contact regarding this? The doctor told them they had to wait 90 days and get a letter from their doctor stating that the medication was no longer being taken and that they are mentally sound without them. Thanks in advance!

Kev, I don't think there is a Master List of meds. There are types of medications that disqualify, but the #1 deal-breaker is the underlying reason for taking the meds.

The only situation I've heard of is the case of persons with ADD who are taking a non-stimulant to treat it. (I know that a few of the drugs used to treat ADD like Ritalin and Wellbutrin are no-no's, but I don't know the meds that are waiverable) If the AME (along with the MRO in our case) determine that the ADD is not disqualifying, they can get good ol' Dr. Silberman to let him/her use the non-stimulant med to treat it.

The best source is the AME. If he/she doesn't have the answer, it's their job to get you the official answer. That obligation comes from their designation...and your canceled check!

If you're an AOPA member their website has an awesome place to check and see if any type of medication is authorized by the FAA for a pilot. If you're not a member, PM me and Ill look up the meds 4 you.
