I have a student whose medical has a limitation that reads:

Not valid for night flight or by color signal control

as a result of color blindness. Yes we know what to do to get the limitation removed, my question is...

Does this mean he can NOT fly solo from a controlled field, or only that if he has radio failure he can not accept light gun signals and must divert to an uncontrolled field?

hmm

Sounds like another one of those "grey areas." The only problem would be is if the radio failed while conducting operations at a control tower. Other than that, I see no problem with operating at a tower controlled airport, since there is no need for color signals under normal conditions. I'd just make extra sure that the student not enter tower's airspace if comm is down.

But then again, what do I know..........! :p
