[font=Times New Roman, Times, serif]Nine U.S. service members were aboard a special operations aircraft that crashed in a rugged area of Albania late Thursday, the U.S. European Command said Friday morning.

The Associated Press reports that search teams recovered the bodies of the nine Americans, citing Albanian military authorities. Four bodies were found earlier Friday, and five more were found inside the plane, Albanian officials said.

The MC-130H Combat Talon II aircraft was assigned to the 352nd Special Operations Group out of RAF Mildenhall, England, when it crashed about 65 miles southeast of Tirana, the Albanian capital, officials said.

The aircraft was on a night training mission with the Albanian military as part of the Joint Combined Exchange Training (JCET) program.

Albania, seeking eventual membership in NATO, has close ties to the U.S. military. It backed the American-led campaign in Iraq, where it has deployed a small unit of 71 troops. Albania also has peacekeeping contingents in Afghanistan and in nearby Bosnia.

The U.S. ambassador to Albania, Marcie B. Ries, thanked Qazimi for the search effort.

“This is an example of the excellent cooperation existing between the United States and Albania,” Ries said. “We are very grateful for the tremendous support from the Albanian military.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Has anyone seen a crew list?

That's what, 3 Talon II crashes in the past two years, all non-combat? What the the hell is going on here? Is there a problem in the Talon II world? I'm not slinging mud or arrows...I'm just asking a question that alot of others should be asking.

dangerous stuff

The Talon mission is danderous stuff. Much if it is low to the ground, at night, and in the weather. The plane is quite capable, but like I said, dangerous stuff. Four have actually gone down in recent history.

I feel for the families. Lots of kids and wives without their loved one.

I knew some of the guys in the Roosevelt Roads crash (I was stationed at Eglin, they at Hurlburt), and one of my best bros in the world was piloting the Talon II that crashed in the giant hole on the runway recently and was splashed all over the AF Times. (side note: he was exonerated in the final report).

It's actually been 5 crashes since 2002. Two crashes lost the whole crews, and another has fatalities on board. There are alot of dangerous missions out there, and to put it into a ratio, if these were fighters, it would be like 40 lost jets in the past 2 years. Five is too **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** many.

Yes they're low to the ground, but in training right now these dudes are supposed to be VFR at low level (legal VFR...not "Talon VFR" or whatever they call it). If there is a culture of pushing the regs b/c "we're Talon II guys and we hack it" it needs to be addressed. Look, I'm not saying this is the case with the Talon IIs and I'm all for pushing it in training (if you don't do it training, how do you know you can do it combat, etc etc), but jeez, 5 planes in 2 years?? Anyone should hear that and wonder if there isn't a community wide culture problem.

The Aggressors had a similar attitude problem in the late 70s, mid 80s, and it killed people. It's just something that should be looked into, that's all.

only 4 Talon IIs have crashed

The other crash was an MC-130P Combat Shadow. The Talon IIs have a demanding mission like I said.

Train like you fight. But do it wisely.

Duke

Duke has the older Talon I. Still nice plane, nice mission. Talon II is much newer/glass.

I wasn't including the Shadow crash in Afghanistan (my bro's squadron) in my count of 5 Talon crashes. Are you referring to the "hole in the runway" crash? That was definitely a Talon unit. Anyway, I don't mean to split hairs and I'm not implying the Talon dudes aren't pros. The number of Class A's and fatalities should raise ?'s, regardless of how dangerous anyone's doc statement is.

The 5th SOS flies -130Ps at Eglin. They share the planes with the 9th SOS (active duty unit).

Great bunch o' guys.

The MCs

MC-130P Combat Shadow, round dial (active and reserves)
MC-130E Combat Talon I, round dial (active and reserves)
MC-130H Combat Talon II, glass-mostly (active only)

I know of 4 T-II crashes and 1 MC-P crash. It is possible I am not aware of another T-II crash. I have been out for a few years, but still have lots of old buds flying them.

Hey Goose, when did you get out? My brother flew Shadows at Kadena and still flies at Eglin/Hurlburt. You may know him...it's a small community. Are you at FDX now?

I was at Eglin, Hurlburt, and Kadena. Left in summer of 01. Flying right seat B-727 FedEx style now.

If he was flying Shadows during the 90s, I probably know him.

Goose17

Yeah, y'all probably crossed paths. He started at Kadena in '98 and is now at Hurlburt. I'm at FDX, too, and hoping to get him on this summer. He has a separation date and it looks good for him to get an interview next month or so. I'll PM you.

Well, from what I know - there were 4 Talon II crashes and one mishap. The mishap was the one that bounced off the ground during a descending slowdown. The other 4 are the Afghanistan one after takeoff...the Rosy Roads one, the Iraq RWY crash and this one.
The Shadow crash was Afghanistan too. I was #2. That was far from fun.
Ivan - from what I gather your TWIN bro flies in the 9th? I was in the 5th when he was there..before he went to the WIC.
