Any thumbs up or down on the Aero Club at Maxwell? This not flying thing isn't working (I'm currently flying the BD-5D, big desk 5 drawers). If anyone has a thumbs up, or down or a recommended alternative in the area let me know.

The idea of taking the open book, closed book and IRC to fly a 30 year old Skyhawk (as opposed to the 40 year old C-5) doesn't appeal to me.

Thanks.

Aw, they got ridda the T-34? Well, the 310 ought to be fun as well. And of course, it won't break as much as the C-5.

well that statement used to be right..they finally got rid of all the old SkyHawks and replaced them with much newer 85ish models along with putting Color Garmins in them..great group of guys. I got my PPL back with them a few years ago. I would def. recommend flying with them..only hassle is all the Aero Club regs and rules ..but you would deal with that at any aero club.

Thanks Otto!

I'll go check 'em out. Their rates seem like they're a bit high (If you include fuel and monthly fees) but if the equipment is nice and newish it'll be worth it. Looks like a good deal if you want to rent a twin. Any idea how big a hassle that might be (check out and insurance?)

Thanks again for your rec...

Depending on how much you fly to make the slightly cheaper rates really benifit you is the key. In General, all Mil flying clubs are more a of a pain in the ass then flying at a local FBO. Tests, Safety Meetings, Rules, Rules and more Rules tend to take all the fun out of it.

Don't know if they had more than 1, but in 1998 when I was stationed there, someone crashed the T-34 (and it burned) in the Burger King Drive-Thru.

A SAS student and the BK manager (Not sure if it was the manager, but definitely an employee) pulled the pilot out while it was burning. I remember them getting some sort of medal for it.

Not to divert the thread for the original poster... I did not fly at the Maxwell Aero Club, but I do fly at others.... I highly recommend it. The tests and meetings sure beat paying much larger bucks in the long run at local FBOs.

Galaxy,
I would def. go for it..the 310 was and still is a great deal!! Only thing that is really going to hurt on that now is avgas since you gotta pay for that. Back a year ago gas was much cheaper so that would be the only neg. about renting it now. However the dry rental fee is VERY attractive.

checkout wouldnt be a problem at all..not sure about insurance but youll probably have to meet certain req's that I'm not sure of off the top of my head

I'll definitely go check it out. As little as I fly these little airplanes I could probably use the structure.

Great place to fly. I built a bunch of C-310 time there. The rules and regs aren't that bad, especially if you fly in the military. Pif cards, etc. You do have to go to a safety meeting once/month to stay current. The rates were great, actually. It was 3 years ago, but I was renting a C310 for about $80/hour dry. After fuel at those prices, it was about $110/hour or so. Not too bad. Granted fuel is about $1 more expensive now, so it will of course be more. Great IFR weather in those parts, too. Had to shoot single pilot down to minimums more than once, that's for sure.
