I have an interview at MAPD next week for an instructor position. I hear that their interviews are very similar to airline interviews (i.e., sim ride, written test and technical interview). I was wondering if anyone has the gouge on them.

Thanks

MAPD Interview

I worked there ten years ago, so things may have changed. Anyway, here's what I remember.

My interview was with the Chief Flight Instructor and Corporate Counsel. I recall the interview itself not lasting that long. I had lost a job and they asked about it; I explained what happened fully and they were okay with it, apparently, because I was hired. I was also asked if I would be willing to teach ground school at San Juan College; of course, I said yes.

There was no sim ride but a flight in a Bonanza. He put me under the hood. It wasn't the usual kind of hood but a Francis hood, the kind that looks like welder's goggles. He had me shoot the ILS into FMN. I did not take a written and I do not recall a technical interview.

Before I was invited to interview I was asked to send in my high school (!) and college transcripts, all my driver records, LORs, copies of my certificates, and FAA file. You might consider taking copies of these records and updated resumes with you to your interview.

Hope this helps. Once again, this was over ten years ago. Good luck with your interview. I'd appreciate seeing a post on how it went and what was done.

I'd also like to hear how it goes as I'm considering contacting them about an instructor position, so please let us know when you get back. Good luck...

P.S.

Don't just consider it, apply

I recommend that you try. You get employee flight privileges. I believe that MAPD instructors also get health and other company benies. The real deal about MAPD is you can be considered for a job with Mesa Airlines. All the while, you will have learned Mesa line procedures because you teach them to your students from the very first flight. It may not put you that far ahead of any street hires in your class, but you will at least have an idea of Mesa line flying, and you most certainly will have learned what Mesa Airlines is all about.

After one year of service you will then be granted the interview for a first officer position which is also a plus if that is the direction that you so choose to take.

Good luck...

I'll be going out on the 2nd of December. I had to reschedule due to my wife having a car accident the day before the interview.

Man, that sucks. I sincerely hope she's OK.

Good luck on the Interview. I'll still be eager to hear how it goes when you do get back. If you don't post here, please send me a short email or something, I'd like to hear your impressions about the place, the interview process, etc.

Good luck again, for you and your wife...

Goodness. I, too, hope your wife is okay. Best wishes to her.

Once more, good luck with your interview. And, please, tell us what was done and how you think it went.

Thanks for the concern. My wife is fine and is already on the go again. I'll update next week.

My flight out of MEM was full on Tuesday. I drove 3 hours to catch a flight that was full. I'm pretty bummed out on this thing right now. It was going to be a long move anyway (with wife and new baby) and I'm not sure that I'm going to pursue it any further. Twice now I didn't recieve my reservation information until the night before I was to drive 3 hours to catch an 8 am flight (They provide NRSA travel for you to get to FMN). I'm not sure what I will do. Good luck to others who are interviewing.

That's fairly typical. Good luck with whatever you choose to pursue.

I had a friend who just interviewed suffered the same experience. The flight was delayed, so he was trying to hurried to the connection flight (be-1900) to FMN, and when he was at the ticket counter, they said they're overbooked and he'll have to wait for the day after! Anyway, for what's it worth, maybe interviewing for a local FBO, you may even have free lunch!

Mesa non-rev to FMN

I traveled on a Saturday for a Monday interview. I paid my way from Sacramento to Albuquerque in the morning and trundled over to the Mesa counter. Flight were full and I sat there all day waiting for a flight. I finally made it to FMN that evening. I had no trouble getting out of FMN and was able to catch my return flight from ABQ to SAC.

I agree, it was a hassle getting to FMN.

I would have been looking at a 10 1/2 hour layover in PHX going and 8 1/2 hours coming back.
