OK, I guess I should know this one by now, but it's never come up before. Say the original POH is lost, can one of the "generic" aircraft information manuals be used as an "Approved Flight Manual", providing all current weight and balance info, autopilot supplements, etc. are included? We're talking 172's here, the original ring-binder version is lost, we have the appropriate model (172N) information manual (the over-the-counter paperback), and all other supplemental additions.

Depends, pre or post 1977 aircraft?

If it is before 1977, you only need an information manual (or a sheet which contains operating limitations and the placards, there is a list of items that are needed in the FARs). If it is post 1977, you need to get another serial number specific POH from the manufacturer (cost is ~$150 I have been told).
