Ive been out of aviation for five years now. I started a business that has prospered and was considering getting back into flying. My question is, I am 40 years old, not current, but have a fair amount of experience. I am interested in Mesa because I live in Phoenix. Any advice concerning hiring, upgrade times etc. would be appreciated.

Consider Southwest

... If you have the 1000 pic turbine.

Yes be happy you got out and have done well. Stay away from any and all regionals they will suck the life out of you.

Tanks for the advice . I might as well save up for an A36.

That's the ticket. If you love flying, buy a plane. Stay away from the airlines, they aren't what they used to be.

Why not fly there for a while? If you aren't relying on the paycheck to make ends meet just go fly and find out for yourself. Nothing says you have to stay with them forever.

Ya money is not an issue. I still have the company for steady income. I was just curious if they would consider someone my age and how long I would be stuck in the right seat.

phx based...

XOJet has a PHX base...just ask any of the dozen or so Swift pilots we've recently hired

The Mesa flood gates are starting to leak as word gets out about our base there...

If you want to stay in Phoenix and not commute your options are limited. It would probably be easy to get hired at Mesa, they are desparate for pilots, and for good reason. But you wouold not be able to hold Phoenix for a while, it is the most senior base. Mesa is notorious for not treating their pilots as human beings and for not complying with their contract. Quality of life is non esistent, and with contract negotiations now beginning the company rhetoric machine is alive and well. The company is positioned to move much of the flying to China to pressure concessions and will likely do it anyways because even with cheapest pilots in the industry under the current contract they are mismanaged and corrupt to the point of being uncompetive. They are walking away from flying at UA because of the pilot shortage. Plus now they are being sued by Hawaiian and Aloha and may not survive financially. Expect further downsizing. If attrition continues furloughs are unlikely, but always possible. If you have 2500 hours you might be able to ugrade out of seniority since most new hires are nowhere near that.

Normally I tell people to run the other direction regarding applying to Mesa. If you wanted to go to Mesa aware of the ********************storm that's about to come down to eventually be based in Phoenix and/or make it a short term gig so be it. Upgrade is probably faster at Republic or Skywest and they are much more reputable regionals to look at.

They'll consider anybody with a pilot's license and a pulse. But it's still a craptastic place to work and it'll kill your love of flying.

With your total time try NetJets. They are about to open a PHX base and you can also live off first year pay.
