What is the definition of instruction? On a flight with a qualified pilot at the controls am I allowed to take my instructor's hat for a portion of the flight, or am I required to instruct, and log it as such, just by my presence? What if I elect to take a litte siesta during the cruise phase? Do I have to log that as instruction?

I don't know in your case what you would be required to log i.e. the current discussion, however, if something were to go wrong with the flight guess who the Feds are going to come after? The CFI everytime.

Funny, this thread has been dead for three years and it just picked back up like nothing happened. The original poster is probably a senior FO or junior captain at a regional airline.

One guy said it right. "fly what you have to, log what you need"
Unlesss you go to an interview bringing all your students logs, no one needs to know. If you crash and die, they might dig deep enough to violate you.
