So this thought came to me the other day...I've got this electronic logbook and a paper logbook too.

Why am I writing in totals at the bottom of the pages? I only need to log for recency or certificates, so why bother?

Here's my thoughts, tell me if I'm legal.

1. Landings - I'm only going to write in full stop landings fromnow onsince that's all that matters..for example the other night, Iwas in thepattern for 2.5 and got 28 total (including TnGs) but I onlyhad 4 fullstops. I'm thinking, I just log 4...satisfies 61.57for my night stuffthis way.

2. Totals - At the bottom of the page, it's just going to getmessy withtotals if I keep writing them in there...so why do it? If I need atotal, I print out my electronic logbook and just go bythat. Kosher fora check ride?

3. Interviews - Hopefully in the not too distant future, I'llhaveone...is it going to look weird if I show up with just theprintedelectronic version? I'm scanning all of my endorsements andI'llbe printing those too, in the back...just wondering. Thanks!

4. Student Endorsements - Looking forward to studentendorsements. I want to just keep an electronic version of theendorsements rather than cluttering up the back of my paper logbook, soI was going to use Excell and then just back up both the logbook andthe endorsement file to a CD, as well as e-mail myself a copy, printingout a hard copy once a month and saving it to the other computer.

5. Flight Instructors - Should I keep a file also with names andphone numbers or at least school phone numbers for the instructors thatsign my book? (Just in case?)

I guess that's it. Just wondering if y'all think this satisfies61.51 and if it's going to cover my ass if something should ever happen.

The only real issue that arises is when you =only= have n electronic log, at least until the FAA tells us what kind of record satisfies 61.51(a). The side issue is the interview. The electronic log is great because, you can find out what the potential employer is looking for and present the most relevant information in the most effective way. But, at this point anyway, they probably want to know that your presentation is backed up with

Beyond that, what you say sounds fine. If you lose your paper logbook, for example, all the FAA is looking for is some reliable way to reconstruct it. The first thing I'd go to is my electronic log.

On the totals? I do categorized flight time page totals in my paper log based on the electronic calculation. Found it useful when getting checked out and they want at least a copy of the most recent paper pages. But I quit totaling landings a long time age.

I would log all the landings so your numbers don't start looking skewed. Sounds like you're a CFI now and getting pleanty of time in to meet passenger currency so this kinda becomes a non-issue until you start flying once in a blue moon again.

You have an electron logbook. Just create a new logbook called "Students" or whatever and enter your endorements and relevant information here. Works like a charm!

My thought here is to keep it simple. You really don't need your instructor information past the checkride and it really becomes a moot point. Other than hooking up with the CFI 10 years later to have a reunion or something there really is no point.

I kept track of landings and approaches and such stuff for several logbooks. However, the little tiny space they leave in those columns in the commercial logbooks doesn't leave much room for anything but a double digit number, even if you write diagonally. I couldn't fit the numbers in any more, and couldn't see the point, and haven't tracked totals in eons now.

I'm not sure that anybody cares.

I doubt anyone does care if you have 9,000 or 10,000 landings... Or a million for that matter...

Still, I log them for some reason... I don't total in my paper log, but my electronic log does keep a running tally, it's 2,913 if anyone really cares... :D

does your space bar not work?

Logging touch and go's

I tried touching my wife last night...

...and she told me to go.

i like to think not
