I just scheduled my first medical exam (class 1 if it makes a difference) and they told me to bring my logbook because they "need to take a look at my flight hours."

Huh? I have never heard about anything like this in the past. Is this normal? Anyone know why they would need it?

Hi...

Typically, a new Student Pilot Certificate applicant wouldn't have a log book as they haven't had any theoretically useful flight time. Since you indicate this is your first time applying for a Medical Certificate, and subsequently a Student Pilot Certificate, the AME is requesting that you provide something that you wouldn't normally possess.

Incidentally, I have neither been required to submit my logbook for a review by an AME nor have I heard of anyone who has.

Regards

I do have one (with 10-something hours in it) and I have no qualms about showing it to anyone, but I'm just wondering why on Earth an AME would want to see it.

Well, there IS a block on the form for flight hours (total, last 6 months, etc), but a guesstimate is all they need there. I've never heard of needing to bring a logbook to an AME, and I've been to several.

If I had to guess, somebody in the office is making up a "policy" that seems to make sense to them, without having any real basis for it.

Hi...

I wasn't alluding to the fact whether you did or didn't have a logbook. I was simply indicating that you don't need one to obtain a Student Pilot/Medical Certificate. I will reiterate, you are not required to have your logbook perused by an AME to obtain any Medical Certificate. If you want to submit it for approval by the AME, that's certainly your prerogative.

Regards

That sounds ridiculous. Schedule an appointment with a different AME. If this doctor requires you to bring a "logbook", I hate to imagine what the actual exam will be like.

COPIED FROM THE AOPA MEDICAL HOMEPAGE:

If you have questions about what to do or how to do it, call the AOPA Pilot Hotline at 800-872 2672, and speak with a medical certification specialist.

A five-minute phone conversation before you make an application may save you from months of unnecessary grounding.

Detailed certification procedures are also available in the members only section of AOPA Online (www.aopa.org).

Maybe this will help you.

It was no big deal... apparently it was only just for the blank in the form, as no one made another mention of it.

The exam went just fine... I peed in the cup and left it in the bathroom as instructed, went back to the lobby to wait, was informed that my cup is missing, (it turned out that someone had taken the initiative to dutifully clean up the mess in the bathroom; how kind of them) went to the doctor's office, got my eyes examined by the nurse (failed uncorrected... bah, now I can't forget my glasses... ever), then the Dr. just banged on my knees, took my blood pressure, listened to my heart, mumbled something about his cousin, took a look at my eyes and ears, then I peed in another cup, and that was it.

Too bad that I was missing a lot of the info re. my past doctor visits, so I have to get that info and fill it in before I can get my certificate. That's okay because my CFI is gone for the week anyway.

What????? That's a bunch of hooey.

I never heard of such a thing - and I've gotten medicals from seven different AMEs. The subject of my logbook never came up.

You do need to fill in some of your time for the application. Maybe what was meant was you should bring your logbook to help you complete the app. But the doctor or any of his/her personnel have no right to review your logbook.

I last took a physical for a medical nearly two years ago after not having held a medical for several years. I had to pee in the cup, but the exam process seemed much easier than it did in 1993 - and, with the exception of one doctor I used, the process was never really difficult. Your own doctor will give you a much more thorough physical than an AME.

When you leave the Tee Tee for the nursie pooh they are not testing for heroine, coke, weed are any of the goodies. They are testing for a Diabetic condition. If you stop by the Krispy Kreme and inhale a half dozen on the the way to your doctor you might have a problem. By the way. If the doctor instructs you to drop your pants for the rectal exam have a plan of action if you detect both his hands on your back when the exam is being performed.:D

Relax Bobby, like I said, it turned out only to be to fill in the blank in the form. :) No one even mentioned anything about it on the day of the exam, it was the clerk on the phone who told me to bring it.

And thanks Catbird, I'l.. uh.. watch out for that surefire sign of runway incursion next time
