The areas popular with CAL folks are Kingwood and The Woodlands. Both are near golf and are high-quality living areas. Kingwood is on US 59 (aka Eastex Frwy) north of IAH, and The Woodlands is up I-45 (aka North Frwy) north of IAH as well. There are also some decent areas out FM 1960 west of I-45. A little further out there's a lake up near Conroe if that's more your style.
Any of these are within 30 minutes or so of IAH. Generally speaking, outside Beltway 8 on the north side is fairly decent. Closer in to the city goes downhill, with a few pockets of exception. West side of Houston has some good areas, but is a lot further than 30 minutes from IAH ... south, you have to get well below Hobby to find good stuff, generally speaking.
If you can get past the blistering summers, Houston is a heck of a place to live ... lots of activity ... culture, sports, lots of good restaurants, pretty much anything you'd ask for. I'd move back in a minute myself.
Good luck!
