i would like to hear from those folks that are based in europe (ie. stansted) and have decided to live there instead of commuting. i heard much, both positive and negative, about the commute, but was surprised that no one living there chimed in. can you live anywhere in europe and commute to work, say amsterdam or barcelona? what are the benefits. negatives etc. i guess i need to speak to someone at the consulate but would appreciate any first hand experiences. thanx.

I wish I could answer your question....im looking to find some N-numbered aircraft in europe so I can live there

I was based in Frankfurt for a while.
Great place to live, and to eat and drink, but commuting from city to city or country to country is not as easy as bumming a jump-seat ride.

Normally an ID-75 or 90 ticket would be the way to travel, or just passes if ya can get 'em.

Perhaps some freight carriers can give ya rides at night, DHL, TNT and others?

Also high speed train service in many parts of Europe.

I'm STN based, but have never had to stay there before going on military leave.

I know of at least one pilot who commutes in from Spain because the cost of living is better in Spain. ID75's and 90's are about the only way to commute if you don't want to pay full fare, if you want to live in the EU.

There is a commuting allowance, but I am not entirely up on it (contract), as I have bigger issues to contend with right now.

There are talks of home basing being in the new CBA.

thanks GCD, by the way, did you write for pro pilot mag? are your initials S.L.? if so great job. anyway be safe and thanx for your input

How about the work permit or the right to reside?? Anyone run into a problem there? Or does Atlas provide you with the right to live there?

No, I'm not SL, but you have read some of my stuff.

Atlas Air handles the work permits through the STN CP's office.
