Does anyone have any insight on living in or around the Nashville area? Good place to raise a family, housing costs, etc etc.

Typical Southern town for the most part?

Thanks all for any help.

Great town in my opinion, though I actually live in Franklin (a suburb 15 minutes south of Nashville) and moved here from Montgomery, AL. In my area the houses are a little more expensive than average. I believe Williamson County is one of the top ten richest in the nation.

The schools in this county are top notch. I'm not the smartest guy, but I'm getting A's here at Auburn and keeping up with guys two years older than me. Something like 4 high schools have been built in this area in the last 8 years with several elementary schools popping up as well, so everything is new and the town is booming.

The weather here is pretty nice. It rains a fair amount and can get pretty cold during the winter, but the Spring and Autumn weather is amazing - lots of clear skies and mild temperatures.

What I like most, though, is the general affluence of the community. With that (for the most part) comes intelligence, culture, oppurtunity, and entertainment that you just don't find in places like Auburn and Montgomery.

I'm not knockin' Franklin, or affluence, but where do you get that money brings smarts?

I worked in Brentwood which is 10 clicks NE of Franklin and THE most affluent city in Tennessee, for 12 years. I cannot verify the money = intelligence theory mentioned by Axis. The intelligence and culture probably increased after I left though?!

Love that town!!

Pilots especially like Nashville because of the hookers that walk Murfreesboro Road just south of BNA; they're as thick as "lot lizards" in a truck stop.

Great place for bringing up the kids too; there ain't nothing like snortin' meth while listening to country music, to bring a family closer together.

Terrific hospitals too, in case a family member "OD's", one of the daughters gets knocked up or junior catches the bullhead clap. :D :D

JK, it's a great town except for the traffic and they're always working on that. If you can afford to live in one of the nicer neighborhoods in Davidson County or in Williamson County, as mentioned above, you'll love it. Lots of good people and plenty to do.

Flylo, that's too much information!

What in the Sam Hill is the bullhead clap? on second thought..never mind.

Slam Clicker, you didn't go to MTSU did you, just saw the duchess under a/c experience and I was curious if you were one of the unfortunate many to have flown it.

Don't worry SC, if you ever get it, you'll know what it is.

In the meantime, here's a tip in case you (or a close friend or relative) do get it:

Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, use the old home remedy of putting you poor little swelled up willie on the window sill and slamming the window down on it in an effort to relieve the pain (no matter how good the temporary relief feels). You're much better off using a standard 2 pound ball peen hammer with medium to medium hard continuous pounding (no pun intended). This method results in the need for considerably less reconstructive surgery.

Of course, I personally never had it , but this advice comes on good authority from a long time Nashville resident who did have first hand experience and now posesses a very wierd wille.:D :D

I lived in Murfreesboro for about three years while in school. Nice college town around 65,000 people (maybe more, its been a while). Lots of traffic. Cost of living is average. Lots of new construction going on. 30 miles SE of Nashville.

Nashville is a nice city. It has a lot to offer. However it is beginning to sprawl and commutes are getting longer. I lived near the airport in Hermitage which was ok and also over in West End (near Vandy) for about 6 mos. I like the nashville area a lot and would like to get back there sometime. Several nice suburban areas (and a few not so nice).
