AIRLINE PILOTS

Airline pilots enjoy what may be the most glamorous position of all airline jobs, and it is a reputation that is deserved. Pilots must comply with some of the strictest employment requirements of all industry workers, including extensive training, rigid physical and health conditions, and continuous retraining and testing.

Once you land a job as a pilot you'll enjoy the rewards that you've earned from your years of training. Like flight attendants, you'll be able to arrange your flight schedule to allow maximum free time. On a daily basis you'll be able to run your own show. Pilots enjoy freedom and autonomy like no one else in the industry. __________________

That sounds like a cool job, how do you get it. My current job stinks I can hardly pay my bills and I have taken two massive pay cuts in 3 years.

Don't know about you, but I like to spend my "free time", pursuing loftier interests. Like how to find another career, how to avoid bankruptcy, keeping the mortgage co. from foreclosing, etc. Of course, I have all my assets tied up in food, clothing, and shelter. Pretty savvy, no ?

Doesn't sound like the hack who wrote this piece has done his/her research! Probably at least 10 years out-of-date.
Dream on.....

That's awsome !!!! They didn't mention the added benefit of not having to visit a proctologist in your later years cos you've been so reemed it just whistles softly when you fart.

They also forgot the part about after working your a$$ off for 30+ years so you could watch upper managment float softly down on their golden parachutes while you are working as a Walmart greeter just to get insurance.

It is a cool job, it is just not very secure and there is nothing unique about a pilots skill almost anyone can do it. I have had 11 jobs since I left the Navy in 1977; four outside of flying, but I always wanted to be around airplanes, so I kept coming back. I have never made big bucks, but I am living the fulfillment of a child hood dream and I am truly a lucky guy. Like my sign off says, "if you are in it for the money, you may be disappointed"

The Midas Touch?

Good for you pilotyip! You seem to be in the minority. There IS no doubt that flying is not what it once was.

For your story, I can find 3 or 4 that say the exact opposite. I too, was in the military once and perhaps if I had made a career of that, I would be much better off. In this industry, I have had a bunch of jobs (flying and no flying), even went oveseas and made plenty of sacrifices just to keep flying. Heck, I cannot even think the last time I quit a job - I outlasted ALL of them.
The last one I had, I really hoped that would see me through retirement. It was not well paid but the quality of life was great - I no longer had to commute from overseas. That position lasted 3 years and they closed the doors as I was upgrading! Then, to add insult to injury, I found the company had been stiffing the employees on thei medical insurance. So, for the next year of unemployment, I also was paying of medical bills to keep the bailiffs away. That was NOT cool!!!!
You're right about the money!
Maybe I just was not good at picking the "right" company. Some people have the Midas touch, others are not so lucky. And today, trust me, luck has a lot to do with it. Take it from someone that has just about seen it all - and is still in the biz and flying!!

Q. What's the difference between an airline pilot and a pizza?

A. A pizza can feed the family of 4.

But hey... it's a glamorous job. :)

Pilotyip,
I think we have had this discussion before :)
I think it is a little different for me because flying never came easily to me. I have had to work really hard to feel confident in my flying ability. I think that is one of the reasons that I may feel that the job should demand more money.
