TSA Adds Lighters to List of Items Prohibited Beyond Airport Checkpoints

U. S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
Transportation Security Administration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 28, 2005
TSA Press Office: (571) 227-2829

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced that all lighters will be prohibited from sterile areas of airports and onboard aircraft. This action is in response to a provision in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, which was signed into law by the President on December 17, 2004, and requires that “butane” lighters be added to TSA’s Prohibited Items List.

After carefully evaluating the security threat, Congressional intent and operational considerations, TSA determined that passengers should be prohibited from carrying all lighters on their person or in carry-on luggage in the sterile areas of airports or onboard an airplane. The policy will be fully enforced beginning April 14, 2005.

“TSA is moving to implement this provision passed by Congress,” said Rear Adm. David M. Stone, USN (Ret.), Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for TSA. “By creating policy to add lighters to the Prohibited Items List we are closing a potential vulnerability in air travel security.”

The agency also acknowledged the role passengers play in making the security process go more smoothly.

"Travelers are a valuable partner in the screening process," said Rear Adm. Stone. "If they pack smart and avoid bringing lighters to the checkpoint, passengers can accelerate the screening process and allow us to focus on those individuals and items that may be a threat to their flight."

All lighters will be banned from sterile areas beyond security checkpoints at airports. This includes, for example, butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo-type), electric/battery-powered and novelty lighters.

TSA’s mission includes preventing air piracy and use of an airplane as a weapon. TSA prohibits items that may be used to that end from being carried aboard an airplane. The lighter ban will fulfill Congress’ intent as expressed in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act and reduce security vulnerabilities, providing one more layer of security for the nation’s travelers.

The Department of Transportation classifies lighters as hazardous materials, and prohibits them from being stowed in checked baggage. TSA will dispose of lighters brought to checkpoints. Passengers at some airports may be able to ship them via a private company for a fee, but TSA strongly urges passengers to thoroughly inspect their carry-on and checked baggage for these items before going to the airport.

Yet....b@stards......

You know, I think TSA and all its "safety rules" are somewhat responsible for how poorly the airlines are doing now. All they do is create headaches for the paying public to keep them "safer." When are they going to start taking there fair share of the blame?

TSA is the biggest waste of money since Regans Star Wars program.

At least they didn't ban matches.

Now how does this make sense again?

It isn't in this story, but I saw in another article about this, they ARE looking at baning matches. They said it was "under consideration".

That's going to make it alot harder to light my farts, in the cockpit!

But seriously, this is getting f*cking ridiculous! Next thing you know, you wont be able to have cigarettes in the sterile area. (And that will make me one severely pissed off pilot!).

What good will they do you anyway, with no way to light them? And I'm a smoker too, so believe me I'm on your side here.

Rub two flight attendants together? Or just bum a light from the TSA guys who have lighters and matches inside the sterile area.

Tuna we will just have to chain smoke all day. BTW the stitches are out, go back in 2 1/2 weeks for physical terrorpy. Time for a Valium....

Jo-MetalHead-bear

Airlines need to raise fares, airline workers need to get their pay and benefits back, and TSA NEEDS TO TAKE A F'ING PAYCUT!!!!

I feel better now.

Hey, I am up for it. The smoking lounge is where all of the "cool" kids hang out. I spend more time up there messing with people, than I do in ops.

It depends on where you go. Some small outstations, the local TSA does takeaway ALL matches and lighters....

Why wouldn't you be able to buy nail clippers? Nail clippers are specifically ALLOWED in carry on baggage.

People have been repeating the anti-TSA hyperbole
for so long that every now believes that it's true.

LJ-ABX...maybe its because the TSA is annoying, completely worthless, and OVERPAID!!!

rant over

The TSA is very close to completing the job that al Qaeda started, taking the finest air transportation system in the world and turning into a farce. It's treason, and it ought to be treated as such.

Why do I call it treason? Because not one of these "security measures" is going to stop a determined, professional terrorist organization from taking out more airplanes! The TSA is harming our industry in every way possible.

How much longer are we taxpayers and voters going to put up with this nonsense?

Sorry, guys... But if I have to choose between keeping fire out of Al Qaida's hands or pissing off a few smokers, I'll choose the latter.

I realize this probably won't stop Al Qaida but I personally don't see the need for people to be able to make fire on my airplane. Most airports are non-smoking anyway, and matches are free at the gas station. Pick them up when you get to your destination.

And I second the notion on the gum kiosk! ;)
