And isn't it somewhat of a violation to create a site with the illusion of anonymity?

I like the anonymity. I like that we can all speak and formulate our opinions by bouncing every random idea we have off others without fear of reprisal. It would be a sad state if this is going on.
I'd love a response from the owner if you can get him to.

You cant really believe that anything you put online is truly anonymous. I guess it's just like your Miranda rights. You always have the right to remain silent. If you give up that right, anything you say can be used against you.

HOLY COW! You have really thrown this one WAY out in left field and taken it out of context:

1.) Yes contact info and ISP addresses can be given out with the proper legal action.
2.) No information is available to the moderators. ONLY the website owner can give it out.
3.) To the best of my knowledge this has never happened on FI.
4.) It can happen on ANY bulletin board...not just FI.
5.) You would need to quit posting on ALL public forum websites to avoid it...not just FI.
6.) Anyone who has basic knowledge of operating software can "ping" someone's account and get an ISP address.
7.) We delete posts with personal info because it's a violation of the "Terms of Service".

Interesting points and info. I wouldn't care if the company new who I was or did a ping pong action on me. I think it would be a great story time, me explaining my post.LOL! Of course no insecurities here. But just think if a person was using slander or bad mouthing a CP or VP. That would suck.

FI is a place to debate, cheer your team on, and have fun. OYS has clearly made his mark. I'm sure you are aware of that.

Really, are you serious. WN wastes it's manpower on reading aviation bourds that have posts put up by annonymous people that may or may not be pilots and can write anything they want. That's comical.

It's not really surprising. I know for a fact that both AirTran and Pinnacle management have this forum monitored. Our management even introduced someone's post from this forum into an arbitration proceeding, and the idiot arbitrator actually cited it as a factor in his ruling against a pilot, even though it was never proven who the poster was.

Which of course would raise the question, how would you even know who is posting something on an anonymous board? Just because they can get your IP address, that doesn't implicate you as that poster. My computer is left on all day, and many times I have found my wife, kid's and neighbors posting away on FI on my account. I've even turned it on at the local High School and let the kid's there have a go at it, all for a class project. I've never thought much of it, being that many here are probably not what they imply to be, a certain couple of dorks come to mind.

Not naive, or too worried about me- though I actually would rather stay on the DL- but not confused that if lisbeth salandar wants to out me or steal all my money, I'm sure she can.
further- I live the Richard Bach quote: "live never to be ashamed if everything you say or do is printed around the world. Even if what is printed is not true."
What I don't like are the"watch what you say" thought police threat coming from a mod. I'd rather think that our mods would aggressively defend our right to speak freely and so would the owner, instead of vague threats that we're being watched by big bro.
Not shooting the messenger, just think it sucks if there are actually employees working to ID people. Keeping up on the pulse of the employees- ok- but trying to ID people in order to discipline is a different thing and I agree with the previous poster- THAT would be a quite entertaining conversation for me as well.

Guess I'm a little sensitive bc I'm getting slammed among friends bc I'm publicly supporting capt d-bag's right to say whatever offensive and distasteful things he wants when operating under the assumption of privacy. And until FAs/mgmt/any other work group start walking around with headset/mics that can have a cheap switch the company installed malfunction and have ANY of their private conversations transmit across half of Texas, I'll continue to defend the sh-thead.
