Hi guys,

Anybody have any ideas of what causes the wingtip buzz on a lear 60 when you are high and fast? I have heard a theory about the delta fins, but i don't know for sure. Just wondering if anybody has any other ideas.
 
Well I know that someone wil give a much more "Calculator Intensive" answer...but if you have more than one pax on board and go above FL430....or even at FL430 the winglets will start to roar.
This is due partly to the fact the the Longhorn wing on a 23,500 a/c is a heavily/highly loaded wing. Very little surface area and heavy weight causes the harmonic vibrations thats focal point is multiplied in the interior of the aircraft...the book says 510...I say good luck!!! I do not take it higher than 430...and I won't do that if I have 4 or more Souls on board...especially at long distances (lots of go juice)!
Same wing on the 31 performs great without the roar...at higher altitudes and and higher Mmo...why???....less weight lessens the wing loading....the only difference is it's 8000 lbs lighter!

Are you sure it's the winglets and not the delta fins? The 45 has a distinct rumble at all weights/altitudes from about .74 to .76, supposedly from the fins. Go faster or slower and you get nothing, but in that range it's very similar to the early onset of stall buffet. I've never checked it out from the cabin but it's very noticeable up front.

I flew both the Lear 60 and the Lear 55 and both had the wing tip buzz. It could not be the delta fins since the model 55's i flew didnt have delta fins.

Winglet/tip buzz!

You can get the rumbling from the Delta fins if you are anywhere close to the greenline at lower altitudes ocassionally. The winglet/tip buzz comes when you are flying redline(or close to it) at high altitudes(FL430 and above) and heavy weights...everytime!

Actually one of the earlier serial numbers 3-5 (I think...can't remember the exact serial number) DID IN FACT RIP A WINGLET OFF OF THE AIRCRAFT...WAS THE WINGTIP NOT THE DORSAL FIN!
