presently doing the do-dilligence on the purchase of either a
new lear 60 or hawker800xp. anyone been through process
recently, ballpark on discounts available off list prices, best
equiptment options etc.
any imput greatly appreciated
I'd suggest contacting both Bombardier and Ratheon. They both have pre-made, side-by-side comparisons of these two. I've got copies from both that are a few years old. I'd be happy to share mine, but why not get shiny new ones from the manufacturers for free?
I've got a fair amount of time in the other Learjets (25, 35, 31a, & 55b), and a little time in an old Hawker 700. I'm told both the 60 and the XP are a quantum leap from their ancestors, but one thing seems to hold true--the pax lean towards the Hawker cabin and the pilots generally prefer flying the Lear. On paper the aircraft seem to match up pretty evenly. I doubt you'd go too far wrong with either.
As a Hawker pilot..I have to say that I preferr the 800 series over the Lear. I like the fact that you can actually stand up in a Hawker cabin and the potty isnt to bad to use.
Ditto, if you need a another pilot (Hawker F/O possibly?)
Having flown only the Hawker I am somewhat biased as far as the airplane. That being said, having seen both the cabins I'd say I'd take the Hawker any day. I'm sure the Lear goes faster, but the plus's the Hawker has to offer over the Lear I would say outwiehgs the speed differences. I can't imagine a more reliable airplane than the Hawker. We've flown them 60-70 hrs a month for the last 7 years and I can only remember 2 or 3 instances when we've missed a dispatch. The 700's are nice, but underpowered. The 800's are even nicer with nice toys up front and not quite as underpowered. The 800XP however, they really got it all figured out. They're well powered, and now with the new Collins Proline 21 (I believe) they are quite a nice machine.
I sat in the sharp-end of a Lear 60 once - wow!!!! I was really impressed - felt like I was sitting in a Ferrari. Nice EFIS tubes as well. Looked like a joy to fly....
I hate the loud APUs on the Hawker 800s - probably one of the most annoying airplanes to be around on the ramp.... Flight deck looks nice, though. Although the ram-horn yokes look odd...
I'd say go for the Lear 60 - looks great on upwind!
If you are planning on a Part 135 leaseback with the airplane, you probably want the Hawker. The Lear 60 landing data does not let you go into most medium sized airports under Part 135...it's the 60% rule thing. With the XP's wing, the landing distances and approach speeds allow it to fly in and out of many airports the Lear 60 can't.
Hawker is a nice aircraft!! But The 60 only needs on the average 3000' or less for 91 ops Landing distance. Figure the rest out for 135. Then run the takeoff distances, or climb gradients and enroute altitudes. Can the Hawker get to the higher altitudes (410-430) at gross weight at ISA +?????? Just something to look at, not trying to offend any Hawker guys.
Having flown the LR-60 and not the Hawker I can not make a very good comparison. The engines put out about the same amount of thrust, 4,600 lbs each, but the 60 is a Pratt and a full FADEC which, BTW and IMHO is very nice and quite reliable. The Hawker 800 has a TFE-731-?. Also, a very reliable and well known engine. The Hawker 1000 also uses the Pratt.
Where the LR-60 is weakest is in its brake energy. The wheels and brakes are little more than those on the LR-35. It has a lot of get-up-and-go, but because of break energy, high hot and heavy performance figures suffer. Still, on one engine at an altitude between say 15,000 and FL200, it can do 300 knots. I really enjoyed my time in this airplane and the time I spent teaching in it. However, I wouldn't mind getting to know the Hawker.
Remember though, the people riding in the back are the ones paying the bills and their comfort is paramount to whatever the crew would prefer. Lots to consider.
