A cousin of mine is an FA for ATA and regularly makes the L1011 trips out to the mideast to drop off the troops. He loves the airplane, but he says the only reason they use it for that trip is that since they're under gov't contract, they can charge whatever they need to for the flight. Whereas the L1011 eats up too much fuel to be used for standard pax operations, the gov't picks up the bill when delivering troops.
