I'm going to be getting deployed to Korea in a little over a month. I just want to hear some positive things about living over there. The majority of the people I talk to have nothing but bad things to say about the place.

Also, does anyone know how difficult it would be for me to continue my civilian flying time over there?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Need more info. Massive differences between Osan, Kun, Taegu, Kwang Ju and the various Army camps.

Kunsan = college with money, but without the chicks.
Osan = lots of fun stuff and bargains to be had.
Both of those you can sample as much or as little of the local culture as you want

Seoul = Massive city with lots to do. The political climate is a little tough over there right now for Americans. Kunsan and Osan appreciate you a little more since you fuel the local economy

It ain't all bad, and I had a blast over there. Of course, by the end of one year at the Kun I couldn't get outta there quick enough. I sorta hit the wall at the 9 month point when I decided I couldn't physically choke down another beer. I switched to jack and cokes with the occasional capt and coke and managed to eke out the final 3 months!

Korea is all about what you make of it. If you take time to go out and explore the country, sample the food, and meet the people, it's a great time. If you never set foot off of US property, you'll be in for a long tour.

Korea is not a bad place at all. I'm having fun. And yes, there is civilian flying over here. You can rent -172s from base.

The BEST year of my military career. Great flying, Great Unit, Great Partying, and plenty of free booze from constant promotion parties. Enough girls to keep you going for 12 months. All that fun while being at 1/2 Attack (2nd ID), just 20K from the DMZ. Fortunately we were located in a "Resort" town for Koreans.

You should be happy you are going to Korea. At least there you can have a decent place to yourself, drink, and enjoy yourself. Versus being over in the Sandbox.

Also, Bangkok is just a quick trip away for a mid tour. Life there gets even better.

If you are stationed at Osan you should have nothing to bitch about. That base is as close to America as it gets. Some AF guys thought it was better then their stateside bases.

Keep an open mind, and form your own opinion.

A buddy of mine just left command of a company in 1-2 Attack. They just (last summer) moved to Camp Eagle after 1-6 Cav (my last unit) moved to Ft. Hood and became 4-4 Attack.

Heard they moved. Life was good at Page. The few times I stopped at Eagle I was happy to leave quickly. At least after 50 years common sense has prevailed, and someone finally realized it would be a good idea to take all the trigger pullers out from under the North Korean Artillery Veil.

It always amazed me that their was not one bunker built on our base, but I guess that is why I had to get out of the Army. Too much common sense is a useless expenditure of effort.
