I saw the thread on the MD-11 making the hard off centerline landing at Kai Tak so I figured I would get some more videos and photos for those intrested.

First, for 3 videos of an approach sequence in a 747 from setup to landing, including cockpit and cabin shots check out this:
http://digilander.libero.it/FSLiveATCAdventures/Video/VIDEO.HTML

For photos and a VIDEO at the bottom of the page of a 747 "saving it" in the last 30 feet of a Kai Tak landing... amazing stuff: http://www.hang-out.co.uk/photos/kaitak.html

747 with likely engine pod strike at Kai Tak: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/047556/M/

747 with for sure pod strike: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/122621/M/ and: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/149179/M/

Check out this turn to final: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/076911/M/ and:

747 strikes an engine pod, engine catches fire, and he goes around. Nice day huh? Starts with: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/122621/M/ and finishes with http://www.airliners.net/open.file/122620/M/

And my final photo? This 747 landing says it all: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/223248/M/

Enjoy!!!

Thanx, that was way cool... Making those landings in a short strip much relaxed. I also got some trailers flying to the old kai tak airport, including a few shots from a CX making a sharp turn on level off. He said engine scraps are very common those days.

fun stuff

why are 95% of the links to airliners.net i see to the medium version of the picture? large is much better IMHO

to save bandwidth i sent people the medium link, many folks still use 56k modems. now for us cable modem folk... the larger the better. :D

My dad used to fly into kai tak (when it was still open) alot on business. he said the turns to final and the approaches over the city were incredible. He still talks about those trips...I think that was his favorite part of the whole businiss trip...that and watching the other people on the plane get scared sh$t less! On more than one occasion would he describe the approach and landing as "sphinter <sp?> tightening."
