I plan on taking a day off work this week, and venturing up to the airport I fly out of, and see if I can find a CFI or some flying job while just bumming around the airport.
Anyone have any tips or advice? Or do I just go in, sit on the nice couch, and watch TWC until people come in, and then spice up conversation with them?

Any tactics from the people on here would be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely!!!

In the past, I have hung out at the FBO and it has brought in some pretty good luck.

Dont do just one FBO, go around the state if you have to.

Do some research and find the FBO's that have alot of activity, you never know what you will find.

And I have found out, you dont want to go to the FBO's that you cant really have alot of access to the ramp area. Even in todays world of TSA, you can still find the FBO's that will let you go out and wonder on the ramp. I would also stay away from the more bigger airport FBO's, you know, the big chain FBO's, Signature and so on. Not becuase they are that good, there just not that condusive to the whole hanging out thing. You want to find a nice municipal airport or the small airport that you can get out and talk to people, look at airplanes and not worry about getting hasled.

You never know who you will meet, you may get lucky.

Have fun.

Thanks.
I am curious as to what questions I should be asking?
I would assume the main question I want to ask is "Are you looking for a pilot or partner for flying?"

I guess saying that to someone on the ramp, or walking into an FBO, would lead them to believe that I am looking for work :)

Get checked out in an airplane at the FBO you want to work for. Start flying there once a week and get to know the people. Don't get stuck on the couch the whole time socializing. They want people who just came back from flying to instruct for them.

Thanks.

Rent a cessna then, and show interest that I want to instruct there, and rent it for an hour a week, and go around the pattern?

Go to the local FSDO and ask them to print up a list of part 135 outfits in the area. They'll give you names, addresses, and info. on the operation. I know at least one pilot who got a job this way.

Good luck.

The Personal Touch

Going 'in person' is a good thing to be doing. I went into one FBO and the guy told me he admired me for 'having the guts' to show up in person and pretty much indicatd my resume would be on top of the faxed in ones.
Guts? Buddy, I'll let you do spin training with me on the wing if I think you're going to give me a job!

Lemme know what you find out in your travels as I will prolly be in the same boat in the same area in a couple years. ;)
good luck to ya!

Still hunting. The main FBO I did my CFI training at has 5 CFI's now, but may be looking for one in the fall. So I guess its time to move onto another fbo and setup camp :)
