Don't get confused between JAS and JALways. WAS is hiring for JALways, while it used to be IASCO who supplied some crews to JAS. About four years ago IASCO was hiring MD-80 Captains for a 5 year contract in Fukouka, I believe that was for JAS.
Hello,
I met a guy while I was in the Navy who's Dad at the time (1999) was an A-300-600 Captain for JAS. I don't know if they are still hiring via IASCO or not? JAL was not actively seeking expatriate pilots, and they were a bone of contention a couple of years ago in union negotiations.
Some of the carriers that do hire expatriates in the last few years were Cathay Pacific, Aer Lingus, Gulf Air, Emirates, Saudia, Garuda, Malaysian and I think Qatari Airways was hiring as well. My info is dated though, so not sure about current. I was able to talk with this buddy's Dad a few times and he really enjoyed his job with JAS, HOWEVER, you better not have any ideas about flying anyway, EXCEPT strictly by the book. I was stationed in Japan for 3 years and can vouch for the rigidness of their operational procedures. We were a tenant unit on a JMSDF base, and they were pretty inflexible on many of the day-to-day things that would have been easy to work around in the states.
Anyway, good luck in your quest to fly for JAS, I think you'll really enjoy your time in Japan. Great people to live and work around once you understand the culture.
JAL and JAS recently merged. Now its all JAL. New livery reflecting both airlines etc. But basically, JAL is the big dog now, no more JAS. Sad really, JAS was a good airline.
Edit- Just done some research. The new company is called
"Japan Airlines System" to "reflect the heritage of both JAL and JAS"
Shrug. Draw your own conclusions.
