Currently i work for a fedex feeder in the northwest flying the atr. i used to work at fedex as a handler for 3 years and now im flying for the company that runs the feeders where i was a handler at. anyways its my ultimate goal to fly for fedex and i have heard that jumping from the feeders to fedex is impossible. i thought it was a good move when i was hired but now im doubting my choice. just want to know how the fedex pilots feel about the feeders.

It isn't impossible. I had a MAC guy in my new hire class. And I know another one that interviewed just this month.

You still have to have all the qualifications, including a 4 year degree, and have the 3 letters of rec and a sponsor. Look at pilot.fedex.com for all the req.

Stop listening to those guys with the chips on their shoulders....

If you're young enough you need to quit your job, join the Marines ( that's FedEx's feeder) and then you're set. FedEx hires VERY few civilians.

I only know of one pilot to get in with Fed Ex from EM, and he flew the Caravan long ago.

Not true. This has been beaten to death. I know this is FI, and it's encouraged for everyone to run their mouths on subjects about which they know nothing. However, when it comes to hiring and careers, you shouldn't spread bad info.

True this has been beaten to death , but there have been so many posts stating that Fedex has an overwhelming bias towards hiring from the military, I personally believe that there must be an element of truth to it.

If Fedex has any integrity on the matter, would someone in a position of authority within the company care to disclose the true civilian/military hiring ratio and perhaps debunk the"myth" once and for all?

I pray I will be proven wrong on my opinion.

Look at the source. The guys posting that are civilians and/or didn't get hired at FDX. If 10 guys out of 500 don't get hired and are civilian, and all 10 post it on FI, it definitely gives the impression that it was their civvie status that was the deciding factor. I don't have solid numbers, but neither do the guys stating that civilians don't get hired. All I can tell you is that I work there and we have a healthy mix.

I will say that the current method of getting your foot in the door probably slews toward mil guys. My OPINION is that it's easier for mil guys to get the required 3 in-house recs, simply because they have likely flown with a larger number of guys over the years and had the opportunity to get to know more people. I probably flew and worked with a 1000 pilots while on AD. A civilian guy the same age might not have had the opportunity to fly with that many guys. However, once you get your foot in the door and get the interview, I don't think your mil or civ status has anything to do with you getting hired.

I'd like to know why people say you can't get hired from a FDX feeder. I have zero knowledge about their ops or hiring policies from feeders. However, it seems to me that FDX would want to hire a guy that has been flying with their logo plastered all over the side of the airplane.

Further, that job seems pretty tough. I'm all about single seat flying, but I wouldn't want that job. Night flying, solo, bad wx, crappy non-tower airports....seems pilots that can handle that and have the min times would be welcome at FDX.

Feeder guys do get hired. Caravan time doesn't count though, so I mean the F-27 and ATR type guys. And they still need the 4 year degree, 3 recs, a sponsor, and a meet n greet, etc.

I was PMing a guy about this recently- we found out that the big mouths that were complaining about this at his feeder have either 1) NEVER applied or 2) didn't meet the quals (4 yr degree, etc).

I would like to know the numbers, too- all civilian background experience, military AND civilian experience, and all military experience.

Atr

well i appreciate everyone for there responses. i however am in the ATR and i suppose i should have put that in the orig. post sorry.

Only one guy (mabie 2) have ever gone Directly from MAC to FEDEX.

It is certainly NOT a flow through agreement.

I can't speak for the other carriers, but I know for a fact that not a single pilot from Empire has gone on to work for FedEX in the last 7 years at least.
I did run into a Fedex pilot on the crew van at AFW who said he once worked for Empire but had an interim job before going to FedEx. So far I do know two who intervied, but did not get hired. One of them now works for Southwest and the other for American.
