My boss our D.O. informs me he wants me to be company instructor in our 402. The problem is I,ve never been in a 402 or even a piston twinn in 2.5 years. Second I,ve never been a flight instructor or even flown from the right seat in 2.5 years. And worst of all all he wants to allow in the airplane is 3 hours of training to keep costs down. The fed I,m supposed to do the ride is a hard a$$ who loves to fail people. Oh and I have 8 days to pretty much become a flight instructor. If he would do this in the jet I fly on a daily bases I,d be fine. Does this sad like a bad idea or am I just whining...

It sounds like a bad idea. I believe you need 5 hours make/model to CFI in a twin. I did my ATP in a Seminole after flying turbine many years. It was not much fun as I'd forgotten a lot about piston operations.

It is a pain to get the boss off your back when he tries to get you to do something unrelated to your job. On one or two occasions, I have been labeled a troublemaker because of my refusal to go along with stupid employer (read: D.O.) ideas. Good luck.

You do need 5 hours(PIC I think) in type to instruct in a twin as a MEI. I cannot remember the regs for pt 135, which I am assuming that you fly under since you have a D.O.

I did the company IP for a 135 freight job for a while. I had not been in the right seat of a Baron ever, but I did have 1000 hours 135 PIC in the plane and was an MEI and even then I found the first couple of checkouts uneasy. Students in twins get spooky at times. If they are experienced and you are just doing their 135 training its not too bad. Mostly I was training new hires straight out of flight instructing with only a hundred hours or less of twin time. It was interesting, but I only had to do it about 3 months before I was picked up by a regional.

If you have doubts about it, I would try to gracefully pass on the deal, especially since you don't hold an MEI.

Bad idea, YES. Legal YES. Thought the insurance company may have some issue with it. Is the Ride with the FAA for you to pilot the aircraft, or is it for you to be a Checkairman in it? Normally you should be somewhat comfortable in the aircraft before you begin instructing and conducting abnormal procedures on a regular basis.

By the way, the national norms for Flight Training in a Multi-engine general purpose aircraft is 6 hours.

If it is for Checkairman status, usually the FAA requires a minimum level of time and compentency in the aircraft. Though I was unable to find anything about minimum times for Instructor / Checkairman other than for Commutor or Transport category aircraft. That requirement is for 500 hours PIC in type if authorized in more than one type.

The way it goes is;
First you have to be qualified in the aircraft as a PIC,
Usually, you are then approved as an Instructor,
Then you submit a resume' to the FAA,
If you meet with their approval,
They / your boss will schedule an observed checkride,

By the way, if you're flying C-310's, C-404's, 421 etc...
The FAA considers them all the same type, with only oral exams necessary after the checkride in the first one.

Good luck, and be careful.

look at it this way. Dont you think you would be doing an injustice to these pilots you are supposedly instructing? How can u teach someone to run if you dont know how to walk yourself?

If there is an incident or accident

With the situation you have described if an incident or accident occurs, the investigators will comment it was probably a bad idea for this instructor to be giving instruction at this time. As posted above, legal yes, bad idea yes. I agree with gracefully pass.

Thanks for the input......... Oh and the same check ride I get for being company IP is the same one that makes me PIC in the 402 . And its all legal how crazy is that. Basically by getting IP in the 402 it makes me not only pic in the 402 but qualifies me to be IP in the companys jets also . And also gets my my part -135.297,299, and 293 a/b check ride at the same time. Oh so much fun....

You do NOT need 5 hours in type in a multi to do an aircraft checkout or PIC check.

14 CFR 61.195(f) only applies to CFI's who are instructing a student for the purpose of a CERTIFICATE or RATING. You need zero hours in type for a checkout, although your insurance may not agree.
