genuinely curious. or is pretty much every spot taken?

if a carrier wanted to get into these markets is it even possible right now?

have a senior capt who wants to 'educate' us jr fo's how the airlines work. i think he's at the only airline he's even been at, #3 for me. just want to make sure i have my fact's straight when i counter his arguments.

thx

Airlines bid on the gate space every so many years and the most recent bidding took place just a few months ago. My guess is that Delta, Airtran and any other airline currently flying into Atlanta get first bidding rights for gates. IF, and that is a big if, any gates are still open after that process they are then opened to new bidders, So I'm sure if Southwest showed up with a bag full of money they could get a gate. But it's doubtfull that Delta, Airtran and the other airlines currently in Atlanta would leave a gate un-bid for.

Remember when the city of Atlanta denied SWA bid to provide service in/out of FTY back in the early 2000s? At the time the city informed SWA that there was only one air-carrier airport in Atlanta, and that was ATL. If SWA wanted to serve the Atlanta market they would have to do so from ATL. During their "explanation" they also informed SWA that all gates were currently leased for at least the next several years.

yea...I remember that.

Hey Uncle Jesse, I guess you haven't been to ATL? I dare you to walk around College Park and Hapeville waving a Confederate Battle Flag. Just a suggestion, before you go out, write your blood type with permanent marker on each limb.
