Granddaddy always said the proof is in the pudding. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has released statistics for January 2011 ranking the 16 reporting carriers in Ontime Performance, Flight Cancellations, Baggage Handling, and Customer Service. Of the 16 airlines, 15 are required to report as a result of recording at least one percent of the total domestic, scheduled-service passenger revenues, and one airline (ExpressJet) is voluntarily reporting. Effective January 2011, Comair (which is no longer required to do so) and Pinnacle Airlines (which had been reporting voluntarily) are no longer reporting data to DOT.
With a complaint to enplanement ratio of .22 complaints for every 100,000 passengers enplaned, Southwest ranked first in the category of Consumer Complaints in January 2011. The industry average for the month was 1.20.
