Anyone else out there recently get a letter from the IRS requesting information about dates they entered and left a combat zone?
A "friend of mine" has and the letter mentions a combat deferment. Odd thing is this friend has always filed by the April deadline and never asked for a deferment.
In usual helpful IRS fashion, when contacting the poc in the letter - my friend got "I'm just a clerk. I don't know what the letter is for..."

I got the same letter and called the IRS. A very nice IRS lady explained to me that military had sent them all the names of people who could have "possibly" served in a combat zone. She said to write "did not serve in a combat zone" across the form and mail it in if you never served in a combat zone.

I get 3 or 4 a year - just write the dates I flew in and out on it and mail it back - have never heard anything else about it
