Need a quick answer to this question. Can an IPC be done completely in a FTD for an airplane single-engine instrument rating? I've read through 61.57, but can't make sense of it right now. I recall hearing somewhere that it has to be in an airplane, can anyone point me in the right direction or reg here?

The quick answer is in the Reg you say you read.

61.57(d)(1) says
The instrument proficiency check must be -
(i) In an aircraft that is appropriate to the aircraft category;
(ii) For other than a glider, in a flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of the aircraft category; or
(iii) For a glider, in a single-engine airplane or a glider

Thnx. I know what the reg reads. Just wanted a second input on the subject, since our current cheif says it can only be done in an airplane (go figure!?).

Yeah, you can definately do an IPC check in a sim or FTD. Just make sure that the FTD that you are using is currently certified to be used for flight training.

Even with these regulations (which, BTW, are written in regulese, not legalese), sometimes a little high school English helps. :)
