An unnamed carrier will be requiring it's potential upgrade candidates to go through a pre selection interview/oral, and sim ride.

This seems crazy and a bad way to use resources since from what I understand, the company does not have a high failure rate at all.

Would you, as a seasoned FO, feel like the company doesn't think too highly of you if they make you jump through all these hoops to upgrade??

just a matter of time before you need to pay for your own upgrade training. Wouldn't it be easier for an ioe or lead captain to do a line check, may be get a feel for how you would do? I think it would be cheaper and accomplish 2 things at once. if you have recommendation letters from a lead captain or IOE captain....what more do you need? Saying no to working a day off are strikes against you for upgrading.............OUCH. Union would fix that one i would guess.

a really bad idea

If anyone from Check and Training at that airline (Jeb?) is reading this--or can have it forwarded to them-- I would submit that this is a really bad idea for the company.

If the upgrade "candidates" are found to be wanting in the oral/sim phase--what happens to them???? They are supposed to be current and qualified per their 121.441 check. If you prove them incompetant, then what? Your POI is going to be interested in this--you did not admininster a complete PC chck, but you have raised questions about their ability and should not be able to return them to the line without additional training--and a PC.

There is a reason not to re-invent the wheel, people.

Absolutely. And I would wonder how much "Captain's Authority" I would have when under the gun.

Well, colgan did make people sign a six month training bond for upgrade after having served a twelve month bond for initial. One of the reasons I left during ground school last summer was that they wanted me (an Beech new-hire Captain) to sign an 18 month bond. So now I fly a King Air 200 for quite a bit more. No triple-fed bus; but no cleaning it on arrival either.

So is COLGAN going to charge you something for the privilege too? Perhpas they're just trying to clean out the FO list so they can accept more money from some new guys.
