T-Mobile all the way, works in some places that cingular does not! Cingular Sucks and sucks more now that it is re-branding as the "we are the giant bow down and give us your money!!!" Ughh... hated AT&T before and now there coming back around for a second go!

We use T-Mobile. It has worked for me all over the world, and I do mean all over the world!

The only place we don't get service is in Gander. Verizon seems to be the only service provider there right now. Not a big deal since we are just passing thru most of the time.

I'd go with T-Mobile.

I am with T-Mobile, GSM service is prevalent at this time, rates for international are steep though, if you frequently fly to one or two different countries, I would suggest buying an unlocked phone and using a local sim card for that country.

economical international cell phone plan

This doesn't exist... I used 25 minutes in Japan this month and it cost me almost $60. I have been using cingular and the only place it will not work is in Japan or Korea (unless you have the right phone) My japanese cell phone plan is only $8 per month though. You will definately do better getting a local sim card and using an unlocked phone. You can buy them online prior to your trip. I use to have a bunch of different ones and would just pop it in the phone whenever I got to where I was going.
