Try SKYPE.
Have been using them for a few weeks and am amazed at the clearity. And it is free, unless ya call somebody's phone, then it is $0.02 cents per minute..

Many times in the past I have used the hotel phone to call home, let it ring once then hang up. My wife would then call be back at a rock bottom rate.

I am based in France and have found that US to France rates are much cheaper than France to US. Try www.mycherrymobile.com as they have the best rates for cellular and roaming. Otherwise buy a card from here eg SFR at most Tabacs and use it to call the US. Bon chance!

Another option is www.iconnecthere.com . I used it extensively a couple years ago when I was based in Kazakhstan for several months. There's various plans, but I paid $10.95 for 1000 minutes a month. You can also use it to call from the US to Europe, Asia, etc. at a varying rates.
